The Winchesters showrunner talks about John and Mary finally sharing their first kiss in the fall finale

Spoilers ahead for the fall finale of the Winchesters“Reflexes”.

The end of autumn the Winchesters aired on The CW, and while some shocking things happened, there was one in particular that made viewers happy. John and Mary have finally shared their first kiss, and showrunner Robbie Thompson talks about the long-awaited moment.

Because the Winchesters is the origin story of John and Mary, their relationship would obviously develop into more than just friendship. As the two hunters tried to stay safe from the Akrida, they shared a brief but sweet moment and kissed. Robbie Thompson tells TVline why this scene was the right time for both of them and what the consequences will be in the second half of the season:

When we first met in the writers room, that was obviously the most important thing when it comes to a show that is a love story. When do you really want to show them that they have to take the leap? We always knew we were going to have a winter break or some kind of mid-season finale, and we felt like, from a dramatic standpoint, he was very quick on the board because he felt like the right place. . And then it was a question of ‘Why this moment?’ In your opinion, obviously, life and death moments tend to exacerbate things… The aftermath of that kiss is something we’re going to play out for the rest of this first season. You have these moments where you just drift into the moment, and it’s like, ‘OK, this is it. And then it’s like, ‘Oh wait, the world didn’t end. ALL RIGHT. Now what do we do?’ There’s a direct take on this in episode eight, which I can’t wait for fans to see.

It was only a matter of time before John and Mary got together, or at least started talking about their feelings. The season so far has built their relationship, slowly transitioning from friends to co-workers to something more. Seeing the fallout from that kiss, especially now that Mary’s dad is in it, is a solid hook for the second half of the season.

Robbie Thompson then praised Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger for their performances. It’s never easy to take on a role already established by several actors, but it’s clear that the young stars have killed that slow relationship:

It was a great time to finally see, and Meg [Donnelly] and Drake has done a great job of slowing the action down to this point. It doesn’t necessarily lead to them living happily ever after or anything, because we still want to play with the complexity of that relationship and the ups and downs that have certainly been kicked up in the mothership.

When it was announced that Donnelly and Rodger would play the parents of Sam and Dean, the question arose as to how they would fill the place of Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith, who originated the roles in Supernatural. Jensen Ackles gave a pep talk to the cast to make sure the The legacy of the original series lives on. the Winchesters The cast is definitely a talented bunch and it should be interesting to see what else happens to them when the show returns.

Meanwhile, in addition to the kiss, the fall finale also featured the return of Supernatural student Gil McKinney, who played John’s father Henry Winchester in episodes of the original series. Although he appeared as a spirit, it gave John and Millie a chance to get close to him, something they haven’t had since his disappearance. Seeing how it affects both of them and whether his feelings about Henry and men of letters change could be important in the 2023 portion of the season.

As for what else to expect when the Winchesters returns, Mary and John’s relationship should be an exciting story. It also comes at a time when Mary is finally reunited with her father, so it’s likely that much of her focus is on Samuel, played by Tom Welling. At least we know they end up together eventually, so that’s something.

the Winchesters returns Tuesday, January 24 at 9 PM EST on The CW. Check out 24 News Bulletin’s 2023 TV schedule to see what else is happening in the new year.
