The first three episodes were released this morning, and people were quick to notice the use of a controversial interview with Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, which is an interview the BBC says would never again be allowed.

The Duke of Sussex also talks about how the media treated his mother, which is how we landed on this BBC clip.
Before the clip plays during the first episode of harry and meghanprince harry said:
I think we all know now that she was brought in to give the interview, but at the same time she was telling the truth about her experience.
Harry’s comments appear to contradict the narrative the royal family has built around this interview. Prince William has previously claimed (via Term ) that the BBC interview of his mother “has no legitimacy and should never be broadcast again”.
In the November 20, 1995 Panorama interview, Princess Diana spoke about how she was treated by the media, and in the Netflix docuseries they used a clip where she said:
To this day I still find the interest daunting and phenomenal, as I don’t really like being the center of attention. When I have my public duties, I understand that when I get out of the car they take pictures of me. But in reality, it is now that I walk through my door, my front door, that I am photographed. I never know where a lens will be.
According to Deadline, this interview became famous because Diana said “there were three of us married,” referring to the current King Charles and his relationship with the now Queen Camilla Parker-Bowles. This part of the interview is not shown in the documentary.
After his mother’s clip in the Netflix series, Harry said:
My mom was bullied my whole life with my dad. But after their breakup, the bullying reached new heights.
This interview with Princess Diana is controversial and Martin Bashir, the BBC reporter who conducted the interview, is now out of favour. According to the article, this 1995 interview recently made headlines when it was published Crown. Diana’s brother Earl Charles Spencer asked the BBC for a review and how Bashir managed to get the interview.
What transpired was that Bashir had used counterfeit banknotes to gain Diana’s trust, and in a report by Lord Dyson the BBC was condemned for “lamentable incompetence”. This led to the resignation of CEO Tony Hall, head of news at the time of the interview, from his position as president of the National Gallery. Since the release of this report, the BBC has donated around $1.8 million to charities related to the princess. They also said the company would never allow the interview again according to Deadline.
The article notes that it is unclear whether Netflix has secured the rights to the Panorama clip for harry and meghan before the BBC said it would no longer allow the interview.
