It was considered by many Stephen King fans to be unfilmable. Stephen King’s seven-book series of the same name the dark tower (with additional tracking history in The wind through the keyhole). We document a history of failed attempts to bring this world to life . The feature film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey has essentially confirmed fans’ fears ignore the source material and killing the possibility of a good the dark tower adaptation. Until now.
If there was one narrator who could pay homage to Stephen King’s masterpiece, it would be Mike Flanagan, the brilliant writer/director behind the Stephen King adaptations. medical sleep Yes Gerald’s game. He also delivered two of the best long-form horror stories in recent memory with The Hill House haunt Yes Midnight snack, both for Netflix. But now Term reports that Flanagan has acquired the rights to the dark tower and will bring them to Amazon when it leaves Netflix, even going as far as detailing the status of the process. Flanagan tells Deadline:
I wrote a pilot, we see it as a series that lasts at least five seasons. And having lived with this project for so long, I have a huge amount in my brain. But I have a pilot script that I’m excited about and a very detailed plan for season 1 and a larger plan for subsequent seasons. I think ultimately, if we can get that going, there are other writers I want to bring into this process that I’ve worked with before; I think they would be really great for a very small, intimate writers room where we can continue to be apart.
Part of why Mike Flanagan stands out as the right creative mind to fit in the dark tower is the way their adaptations of Gerald’s game Yes medical sleep not only did he honor King’s tone and intent, but more importantly, improved the work that the author had woven through his books. It may sound blasphemous, but Flanagan has figured out how to bond medical sleepa sequel to King’s book the splendorin a tribute to Stanley Kubrick’s film… a very difficult task that the director somehow managed .
And now Flanagan says he’s embarking on this project with Stephen King’s blessing. He tells Deadline:
The pilot script is one of my favorite things I’ve ever worked on. It was surreal to work on it. We are therefore honored and grateful that Stephen King has entrusted us with such an undertaking, something so precious to him, and we look forward to finding the right partners to carry it out. … It happened because I sent him a very, very detailed sketch of what I wanted to do with it. And it was in response to that that he gave us the rights. I wouldn’t want to get involved in a project like this if we took it in a direction that would be blasphemous to Stephen King’s material, but he’s been very supportive and very enthusiastic about what we’re doing. I would do with that.
Mike Flanagan’s full scope would include five seasons of a TV series (he says he’s so impressed with what Amazon Prime Video made with The Lord of the Rings this year), followed by two feature films. Perhaps this means that the first two books in the series, The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three, make up the first season? Does that mean maybe the last book, The Dark Tower, is a two-part movie? There is so much material and so many ways to get into Flanagan. We just have to be patient to see what he has in mind.
