Spoilers ahead for the fall finale of Chicago Police Season 10, called “Test of Charge”.
Chicago Police has a knack for late-fall finales that can range in intensity from bloody cliffhangers to vow-exchange, and the last episode of 2022 it was approaching a very dark development… and it was one that could have gone in several directions. Showrunner Gwen Sigan spoke to Gossipify about the shocking twist at the end of the hour and And Upton? after Sean O’Neal spent several episodes trying to get inside her head.
The intelligence unit was stuck in a bad spot during most of the “charges” as they knew Sean was guilty of sexual assault and trafficking, but weren’t able to get the evidence they needed in time to arrest him. Chief O’Neal deliberately stayed blind for as long as possible, trying to protect the son he loved despite everything. Voight finally forced him to look into the evidence and see what was really his son, while Upton visited Sean.
Initially, it seemed Voight or Upton would have to cross a line again if they were to put him behind bars, but his fate turned out to be much grimmer. Sean went to his father’s house, but it was unfortunate that he took refuge there. The chief shot his son in the head and then himself, dying instantly. Sean, however, somehow survived the shooting and Voight started helping. Upton didn’t immediately jump into action, but ultimately decided to help him rather than let him die.
So the mean but basically decent boss died while Sean survived. When I spoke to Gwen Sigan about the “Test of Burden,” I asked her if she ever thought about keeping Chief O’Neal alive, and she shared:
Much! I mean, because we loved Michael [Gaston] both as an actor, we wanted to keep it forever. We had so many different versions, and I think as soon as we got into that dilemma, are you saving a monster? Will you save the guy who’s most irredeemable and who basically told you “I won’t change, I know I can’t change” and that he’s committed all these horrible crimes? I mean, I think he’s probably one of the worst villains we’ve ever had on the show just because they’re kids, and he’s been so prolific.
After ten seasons of bad boys, it takes a truly terrible villain to rank among the worst of all time. Chicago Police history! According to Gwen Sigan, there were a few possible versions where Chief O’Neal failed to kill himself in a murder-suicide, which could have meant Michael Gaston would reprise the role in the second half of season 10. Showrunner continued to confirm that Jefferson White will return as the boss’s son and further explain why the decision was made to have the father die and the son live:
We have to live there, so that the good man dies, and that bad man can live and still be in our universe, and we’re going to bring him back, so his story isn’t fully wrapped up yet, it just felt so interesting. And also this dilemma for our characters as to what that meant for Voight and Upton at the time. It’s a decision that I think would have been different a few seasons ago, it would have been different at the beginning of this season too… In my opinion it was based on a lot of things. It was Voight who wanted to save Upton, who wanted to make the moral and ethical decision because he knew she couldn’t have done it at the time and you couldn’t live with it.
If the first half of season 9 proved anything about Upton, it’s that living with the secret of killing herself hasn’t been easy for her. She was only in Roy’s trouble because of Voight, so it’s fitting that he tried to stop her from deviating as much as possible from her moral path in season 10. After all, they didn’t get Halstead to do it. be there for them. more her. Yes try to stop it from going too distant. Gwen Sigan continues:
I think it was an echo of what the boss said at the beginning of the episode, that you are responsible for the people you choose to have in your life and the people you love, that you owe them a responsibility. It was a huge growth moment for Voight as a character for me. They have made the right decision, ethics for themselves to a large extent, but this does not mean that the consequences will be positive. You know, you saved a monster, so let’s take a look at this complication.
Sigan has not revealed when Sean will return or what his condition will be. After all, even though Upton and Voight saved his life, he was still shot in the head. Regardless of his health, he seems safe to say that his life as a man free to commit his horrific crimes is over. When Upton and Voight found the girls alive, they also found witnesses to put him behind bars.
Of course, it’s possible that Sean’s words and actions will continue to affect Upton even now that the case is seemingly closed. He took every opportunity to comment on her blackness and claim she was broken, which was a bad time considering Halstead’s departure. When I spoke with Gwen Sigan, I asked her if her hints of blackness and breaking up referred to what fans have already seen with Upton or something yet to be explored, and she shared:
I think we’ve seen it. We have definitely seen that it can get very dark. I think we established a few seasons ago that she just can’t live with that. Last season we saw her guilt over what happened with Roy the previous season, and I don’t think she has the stomach for what she’s thinking about doing.
Upton literally was scratching bloodied with guilt over Roy’s death , and that’s when he killed him to save Voight’s life! She also said at the time that she couldn’t live with it while she was in the midst of a panic attack, so Voight pushing her to help save Sean might be for the best. You saved a man later consider letting him drown last season , but this time he needed help to do it after everything he had been through. The showrunner continued:
Then the other part was him constantly telling her how broken she was and she could see that, especially in the state of mind she’s in now that Halstead is gone, and I think she carries so much with her. . and problems with his family. It’s interesting, because I think somehow she might think she’s broken, too… She was using it to trigger something in her. I could see she was there.
Well, at least it seems Chicago Police He’s not going to dig up another layer of long-buried trauma in Upton’s past! The show only touched on her experiences as a child without showing any of her family members on screen, but viewers saw how it deals with (or doesn’t deal with) her husband who abruptly leaves the country in an undated concrete production. . (Actor Jesse Lee Soffer i will be back PS in 2023 but not like a star!)
