Spoilers ahead for the fall finale of chicago fire Season 11, called “Nemesis”.
chicago fire has a reputation for delivering crazy endings to keep fans guessing during the break, e the fall finale of season 11 ended with the lives of not one but two Firehouse 51 heroes trapped inside a house with explosive devices. After Stella makes a fateful decision, her and Carver’s lives are in grave danger, and she’s just one of the threats left hanging after “Nemesis,” as Emma’s return doesn’t bode well. Showrunners Derek Haas and Andrea Newman spoke to Gossipify about what happened and what’s next!
After the season 10 finale ended with Stellaride’s life in danger from some very nasty gunmen rather than a fire crisis or meltdown, season 11 is a terrifying return to the norm… which could be bad news for Stella and Carver. When the showrunners spoke to Gossipify about the fall finale, Derek Haas teased the immediate aftermath of the two Firefighters from Truck 81 trapped in the exploding building:
To collect [Episode] 10 after winter break, right when we left it with the explosion and Severide out, and for us it really played out like something we hadn’t seen much, namely Severide out when not only his firefighters are in danger, but his wife is also in danger. And it’s going to be in this resolute layout of “I’m charging into the scene not even knowing if there’s some other device that hasn’t exploded yet and it’s going straight into the fog” and that’s going to be the beginning of the next episode.
Well, when a raid on the homes of criminals known for hiding illegal weapons goes awry, who better than the heroes of Firehouse 51 to risk everything to try and save the day? Stella took a personal role in the crisis as soon as she learned that Detective Pryma was the one who had been impaled by an explosive and needed medical attention as soon as possible. The explosion occurred shortly after Severide arrived on the scene, just in time to discover that his wife was inside. Stoplight won’t come back sooner TV show 2023 starts, but I’m already glad we’re not dealing with a huge time jump in the series!
Of course, not too long ago, Carver would have been low on the list of people Stella would want as a partner in a situation like this. When I asked the showrunners why she and Carver were the right couple to enter the building in explosive suits, Andrea Newman explained:
Stella is the lieutenant. It’s funny because even Boden has said this in the past: You wouldn’t put your team into the game before yourself. Always put yourself first, and that’s what she does. She is the first person. If there was only one person it would be her, but they need two people and she has to make that decision. She does so partly based on the experience that Carver brings to the table, but she also does so based on the fact that they’re in fragile territory. She also wants to come in and see what she has to some extent. They are the two who ended up there.
To the credit of Truck’s characters, there was no shortage of volunteers to join Stella on the perilous mission. Mouch also said that he should go because he should always be the one to risk his life in these kinds of situations. But he ultimately chose Carver, who had a proven track record as a firefighter and started doing well at age 51. If they both survive this cliffhanger, they could have a bond literally forged in fire!
There was another surprise in “Nemesis,” but not one that would endanger anyone else’s life. As part of a pretty impressive stunt (that sent Taylor Kinney over a bridge, like proven by epic behind-the-scenes footage ) with Severide in grave danger, Carver had to knock down a door and push the bridgeman to access the controls. The operator filed a complaint, so Internal Affairs sent someone to investigate… and who should that person from Internal Affairs be, if not 51-year-old former paramedic Emma Jacobs!
Emma’s return was as shocking to the characters as it was to many fans, as it seemed unlikely that she would thrive in CFD after missing a call in season 10. She was so kind and sweet in ‘Nemesis’ that there’s no way that it’s not pretending, and according to Derek Haas, actress Caitlin Carver just didn’t come back for once. The co-showrunner said:
Oh no, she’s back. It’s like that stain you can’t get out of your sock. You thought you were done with Emma Jacobs, and now she’s in an even more dangerous position than we saw last season. You’ve somehow worked your way into the internal affairs division, which may be responsible for the life or career of firefighters, and you’ll wield that power.
And pity about Violet’s relief at Emma’s departure! Firehouse 51 may have to be careful not to cross the lines lest they attract the attention of Internal Affairs, as Emma can observe them very closely. chicago fire this could resolve the suspense of Stella and Carver’s fate soon enough in 2023 (and hopefully without Severide hurting himself trying to save his wife), but it looks like the Emma problem will be there for a while.
chicago fire will return to NBC Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 9 p.m. ET, between Chicago Mediterranean (who left a big reveal at the end of its fall finale ) at 20 hours. Chicago Police (who it has some major obstacles and the Upton obsession in its fall finale) at 10pm peacock subscription .
