Warning: Spoilers ahead for the fall finale of Chicago Mediterranean Season 8, titled “This could be the start of something new.”
The end of autumn Chicago Mediterranean the eighth season of it was to be a game changer due to the highly publicized departure of Brian Tee as Dr. Ethan Choi. Thankfully, showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider weren’t kidding. when they were anticipating a happy ending and Ethan and April’s church wedding, and that happy ending is a relief in light of how the episode ended. Jack Dayton, who’s already proven to have a blind spot when it comes to patient care, has bought a majority stake in Med, and according to the showrunners, the aftermath will be messy.
First things first: let’s analyze what happened. Jack Dayton’s financial and technological support in the hospital after being rescued by Crockett seemed too good to be true for a while…and now the characters discover there are constraints. Crockett didn’t like being brought to fame by Dayton, and he got into trouble when the revolutionary OR 2.0 didn’t let him use his expertise during the surgery when he’d already been hesitant to perform the procedure behind his back. . an audience of business people. For a moment, it sounded like Dean’s reference to HAL da 2001: A Space Odyssey It wasn’t too over the top!
The doctor familiar with Operating Room 2.0 was able to leapfrog the technology and let Crockett use his own techniques, but it was an example of business and technology that could potentially prevent saving lives and gratitude for the new operating room. . it didn’t seem to extend to doctors who wanted Jack Dayton even more involved in their work. Goodwin, Will, Dr. Charles, and the Kalmick Hospital attorney learned that Dayton had finally bought out the majority stake.
While it wasn’t a do-or-die cliffhanger like the fire in the season 7 finale, comments from the showrunners indicate it still counts as a turning point for the remaining characters. When Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider spoke to Gossipify about the fall finale, I asked them what was going on with Dayton and OR 2.0. They shared that “trust” issues are just one of many complications along the way, saying:
- frolov: “There will be many complications. Not only medical, but ethical”.
- Schneider: “It’s an incredibly expensive technology, who’s going to pay for it all? Which patients will have access to this technology?”
- frolov: “And as you saw, how much do you trust the car? What is the role of human beings with technology?
- Schneider: “It’s a tool, but it’s a very expensive tool, and you still need a surgeon to use this tool.”
While it’s too early to predict what will happen if there is a standoff between the businessman and the doctors, Dayton could be caught if the surgeons come under enough pressure to refuse to operate. I can imagine characters struggling with not being able to use OR 2.0 to save everyone, if it turns out the technology is only for the super rich. Plus, there’s the whole question of whether technology can be trusted as much as a human being!
Unsurprisingly, after Crockett’s reluctance to have the surgery done, and however lucky he may have been that it worked out, Diane Frolov confirmed that she “was conflicted about it.” He’s probably the most important character who would use OR 2.0 and has the closest connection to Dayton, so the second half of season 8 could be tough for him. I’d also like to see Dr. Abrams take on the technology.
So now that the businessman has a majority stake in the hospital, will that allow them to continue their medical business as usual or will it change the way everything works? According to the showrunners, he certainly didn’t buy Med out of the goodness of his heart to let them continue as they were. Schneider and Frolov said:
- Schneider: In evidence! Changing Goodwin’s role at the hospital. Supply chain issues will be resolved, but at the expense of other problems at the hospital.
- frolov: There will be issues of, as Andy said, power, priorities, politics.
- Schneider: Jack liked the flash cure, not necessarily full patient care. He’s not a doctor, he’s a businessman.
The changes to Goodwin’s role could be bad news for everyone, as she tends to support doctors and nurses as much as possible and is often willing to sit on the board. She also told Will and Vanessa that she suited him his illegal methods of obtaining drugs for a patient , except that they had hidden it from him. Goodwin generally wants to prioritize patient care over money; Dayton might not be in the same book, let alone on the same page.
So what will happen in the second half of season 8, with Ethan left ED and Jack Dayton suddenly in a strong position? know when Chicago Mediterranean go back in 2023 TV premiere schedule Wednesday, January 4 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, premiere chicago fire Season 11 and Chicago Police Season 10.
