Robert Downey Jr. shouts Top Gun: Maverick as he responds to comments Quentin Tarantino and others have made about Marvel

Over the next nearly 15 years iron man release, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has released many new superhero movies and TV shows, and with more and more content comes more and more scrutiny. With Martin Scorsese compares the MCU to theme parks more than being cinema, Quentin Tarantino’s recent comments on Marvel Movie Stars , Yes James Cameron criticizes the characters in the franchise , it’s clear that some notable filmmakers disagree with the trajectory of the MCU. But what does Robert Downey Jr., the man who played the first MCU hero, think of Marvel’s recent speech? The answer lies somewhere in the middle of the conversation and involves a salute to great success. Top Gun: nonconformist.

The MCU, of course, all started with Robert Downey Jr. Man of Steel in 2008. The actor would go on to play the hero in eight more films, reaching its conclusion in 2019. Avengers ending. When RDJ was asked about the most common reaction to the MCU from big names, he replied with this:

I think our views on these topics say a lot about us. I believe we are in a time and place to which I inadvertently contributed, where intellectual property took precedence over principles and personality. But it’s a double-edged sword. Intellectual property is only as good as the human talent you have to represent it, and you can have great intellectual property, even if it comes from the national treasure of an author or writer-director, and if you don’t have the right kind of artist playing this sheet, you will never know how good it could have been.

In his interview with Term On Thursday, Robert Downey Jr. spoke about the current state of the film industry, where big franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe have “priority” over more original Hollywood projects. While RDJ understands that he brought about this change in the industry with his role as Tony Stark, he also explains how good directors can get their hands on a Marvel project and make it great. He also said this:

I think creatively it’s a waste of time to be at war with ourselves. I think it’s a time where everything is much more fragmented now that I think you have that kind of fork. Throwing rocks one way or another… and I’ve had my reactions in the past when people say things that I think discredit my integrity… they’re like, ‘You know what? Go on. We are all a community. There’s enough room for everything,” and thank goodness for Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water. That’s all I have to say. We need big stuff to make room for movies like Armageddon Time.

In other words, Robert Downey Jr. thinks there’s room for both. We can go out and see all the upcoming Marvel movies and also supporting smaller-scale films that aren’t based on an established franchise. Ultimately, the actor has spoken that he doesn’t want to see the industry “at war” with itself over these recent criticisms, and instead wants to remain a community.

Also, RDJ yelled at Top Gun: nonconformist Yes Avatar: the path of waterwhich are two huge franchise successes that encourage many people to return to cinema and thus help the film industry a lot. Top Gun: nonconformist is currently the highest-grossing film of 2022, grossing $1.488 billion at the global box office. Dissident it’s also getting award attention, as of late it won the award for best film of the National Examination Commission. james cameron Avatar: the path of water it should be the film industry’s next monster blockbuster.

As for Downey’s upcoming projects, the actor starring in a series with Sandra Oh I call the sympathizer and Cristophe Nolan openheimerin theaters on July 21, 2023. With these two titles alone, you can see that he practices what he preaches, as he does both kinds of projects these days.
