breakthrough is back on television with a new revival, and while it doesn’t currently have Scott Bakula on board, that hasn’t stopped it from finding an audience in season one. The show is obviously getting enough attention from NBC viewers and Peacock Premium subscribers that the network has already officially ordered a season 2. The cast and showrunner Martin Gero were understandably excited by the news, and while the cast celebrated with a fun video, Gero decided to talk a little bit about what was in store for next season. season.
NBC celebrated the breakthrough revival on your Instagram page, and did it with the help of distribution. Watch the video, in which Raymond Lee, Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park, Nanrisa Lee and Ernie Hudson react slightly NSFW:
For those confused, it appears to be a nod to Dr. Ben Song’s reaction just before he blasted off into space on a rocket ship in the pilot. There’s been some fan debate as to whether or not this is the equivalent of Sam Beckett’s “Oh boy” catchphrase, and while this video doesn’t solidify the “Oh shit” legacy, at least another season is coming up for the cast and crew to try and make it a thing.
As for what else breakthrough could go on, one has to wonder if there will be a bigger effort to try and bring back Scott Bakula as Sam Beckett. The series confirmed in its pilot that if Beckett is still alive, he’s still jumping. In the real world, Bakula revealed that he is not currently involved in the show. Showrunner Martin Gero said he would keep asking Bakula back and that he thought it would be very exciting to bring in the former star at some point.
another season of breakthrough it also means that Martin Gero has more time to flesh out more of the story that season 1 has just begun to tell. Gero took to Instagram to thank fans for their support and offered a little insight into what’s to come for season 2:
Wow! Thank you so much for making this new version of Quantum Leap a huge success and ensuring the start of SEASON 2! This cast and crew overcame some very tough initial setbacks to create an incredible season of television. Very proud of the hundreds of people who work tirelessly with so much passion to bring you this show every week. Our plans for season 2 are pretty crazy and I don’t want to give anything away just yet…plus there are still so many good episodes left from season 1 (we’ll be back in January)! Thanks to our dear friends at @nbc and @peacocktv and our super supportive studio partners at @universaltv! Before!
breakthrough there is a lot going on right now, as the Quantum Leap program is in danger of being shut down thanks to government surveillance. There’s also a mysterious jumper that Ben unknowingly follows as he jumps, and investigating this man in the current timeline has only left Magic and the crew with more questions.
Let’s not forget the whole mystery behind why Janis Calavicci, Al’s daughter, is apparently sabotaging the project and how Ben is connected to it all. Ben has lost his memory in the jump, so he can’t help the team figure out why he was working with Janis, even if he keeps jumping, he might remember the answer.
And if all that wasn’t enough to keep your audience engaged, breakthrough it still has its classic episodic jump format where Ben has to help others and find his way to the next jump. I guess these next jumps won’t be ones that will bring him back to his time anytime soon, but who knows? We may be surprised before season 2!
breakthrough returns to NBC as part of its 2023 television schedule on Monday, January 2 at 10 p.m. ET. This could be the perfect time for anyone waiting to catch up with Peacock and understand why the series marked its renewal.
