Just over a month and a half ago, fans of the DC Extended Universe received some exciting Superman news: Henry Cavill was returning to the role. However, it was before the big regime change at DC Studios that now sees James Gunn and Peter Safran ruling the news. Now, those same DCEU fans are likely upset, as it’s been revealed that while a new Man of Steel movie is in the works, it won’t be Cavill playing the hero.
Henry Cavill himself confirmed this latest news in his personal account. Instagram page. The actor shared a few paragraphs of white text on a black background, and in his statement he confirms that his time on the big screen in red and blue pajamas is over:
This was combined with a post about Chirping by James Gunn, who has continued to be very active on social media since landing the job as co-head of DC Studios. In a Tweet thread, he confirms that he’s currently developing a new Superman movie based on a script he’s writing himself that will focus on the character early in his life. As a result of this creative decision, the role will be recast and a new actor cast to play Clark Kent. You can read their tweets combined into a statement below:
Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go that we couldn’t be more excited about; we will be able to share interesting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year. Among those on the list is Superman. At first, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character won’t be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and have talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.
It was in a follow-up tweet that he confirmed he was writing the script for the untitled Superman film, posting, “Writing (and it’s been a while). We still don’t know who’s boss.”
