The holiday season gets musical on CBS with when Christmas was young as his next Christmas movie, with Karen David in the lead role of Melody. She brings her talents as an actress, singer and songwriter to the TV movie as her character is a talented musician who has given up on her dreams of going into business… but what could be better than a little ‘ of Christmas magic to awaken hopes? ? The film’s title track was written by none other than music icon Sheryl Crow, and Karen David opened up to Gossipify to perform the song and get her first taste of country music.
Karen David is no stranger to musical projects on the small screen after that two seasons of Galavant but when Christmas was young it’s a very different project centered around a Christmas song with the potential to become a huge hit… if only musical director Luke can convince Melody to grant him the rights to the song. Sheryl Crow (who also produced the project) wrote “When Christmas Was Young,” which viewers will hear David sing when the film airs Dec. 18.
It also marks Karen David’s first Christmas film, and she shared with Gossipify what attracted her to the Christmas-themed project and Melody’s character, saying it was an opportunity for her to get back to her roots as a songwriter. and she has already “trained them both” to sing and act. She explained:
Coming full circle on this journey where I got to sing and the story is about this song, and what I love about our film is that the music is the heartbeat of the story, and how the music brings everyone together and the impact of just this song and the way it changes the lives of all these characters is so beautiful. So being able to sing a song written by the amazing Sheryl Crow was a dream come true. I can’t even begin to express how emotional it was, just being able to sing his beautiful lyrics. No one creates a song like Sheryl Crow.
when Christmas was young it’s Nashville themed with a country music showcase, so it’s only fitting that a name as big as Sheryl Crow write the title track which is, as the actress put it, “the heartbeat of the story” in the film. Plus, it turns out the actress was encouraged to work with Crow years ago. Karen David continued:
I remember being a student when I was about 16. It was this summer, I was at Berklee College of Music, and there were guest speakers who were there…and it was Bonnie Raitt who was there and she was talking about Sheryl Crow. She was telling us, and we were all like 16, naïve, vulnerable, we didn’t know what the music business was like and Hollywood or something, and she was like, ‘If you ever get the chance to work with Sheryl Crow, I’ll highly recommend” and we replied “Really? Will it ever happen in our lives?
Getting a recommendation to work with Bonnie Raitt’s Sheryl Crow as another music legend is impressive endorsement, even though it seemed unlikely to David at the time that he would get the opportunity. He then shared his reaction when he heard Crow’s original song that he was going to perform for when Christmas was young for the first time:
I was on a train home to London when I was on a home visit earlier this year, and then I heard Sheryl Crow’s demo, sing the song I gotta do, it’s me. For example, I was literally screaming. I wore my mask and you see those eyes that say, ‘Oh my God!’ Just screams. I will never forget this moment. It was so sobering, deeply sobering, and I was so grateful to have the opportunity to sing one of Sheryl’s original songs. And what a song it was! And to be able to record it and release it as a record and have my husband produce it as well, there is so much to this film that makes it so dear to my heart and so incredibly special.
The song is already available on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and the iTunes Store, so now you can listen to Sheryl Crow’s Christmas song sung by Karen David. The song also has a personal touch for the actress, with her husband Carl Ryden producing. also hit instagram to promote the song and his wife’s performance! Is it any wonder that working on the Sheryl Crow song was a dream come true for David?
Of course, playing a singer from Tennessee who once dreamed of making it big in Nashville meant playing in a new genre for her. When asked if when Christmas was young it was her first country singing experience, Karen David revealed:
I was so nervous!… I love a good country tune, but I’ve never had the chance or even the courage to try singing in this style, because there are so many people who are professionals who do it so well. You know, I liked pop music more. But I have the impression, especially in our time, of Taylor Swift, for example. She simply cruza esas fronteras, where she holds some of this funk, holds some of this country style, but even here, even though it’s so accessible in the world of pop… What Sheryl writes is also very Sheryl Crow, which is love. At the same time, it is a kind of bridge between these worlds.
There’s no denying that Taylor Swift has successfully crossed genre boundaries, given this Ticketmaster has recently been blocked Because he had so many fans who wanted to attend his concerts! Sheryl Crow is certainly successful enough for her name with her genre-bending methods (and a james links musical theme to start), and it seems like “When Christmas Was Young” was a great way to dive straight into the country for David. He continued:
So that not only has these country influences and a little bit of a pop influence, but also these Christmas influences in the song, adding a little sparkle and trying to find some common ground, so that we can be complete. to each of these genres and styles. But it was heartbreaking and of course I was so nervous! Sheryl Crow in the demo sounded amazing, and I was like, ‘I don’t know if there’s anything better than this.’ Not that I would ever dream of competing with her. So it was just a matter of finding a performance that was true to the film and also true to Melody. When you have Sheryl Crow, she sets the bar.
