Charles III spoke at the Accession Council, the council that precedes his official proclamation as the new King of the United Kingdom. It was the first time that this ceremonial meeting had been broadcast live on television. During this short speech, he renewed his promise to serve the British by following the example of his queen, Elizabeth II.
“My mother set an example of service. My mother’s reign was unmatched in its length and devotion,” recalls King Charles. […] I am aware of this heritage and of the duties of responsibility and sovereignty that are now transmitted to me”.
He succeeds a very popular queen.
Elizabeth II is the longest reigning sovereign of Great Britain and enjoyed great popularity among her subjects. The new king assures us that she “will [son] better to follow this example that inspired me, according to the constitutional government”.
Carlos III assures that he will be well accompanied by the different officials who proclaimed him, the elected Parliament and members of his family, in particular “his beloved wife” Camila. “In order to carry out this heavy task that falls to me, I will dedicate what remains of my life to this task. […]”, he adds.
The King was then officially proclaimed at 12:00 French time by David White, King of Arms of the Order of the Garter, on the balcony of Saint James’s Palace.
