James Gunn addresses DC backlash and toxic fandom regarding shared universe’s new direction

In early November, James Gunn and Peter Safran began their roles as co-heads of the new DC Studios, and there’s been a flurry of DC movie-related news in recent weeks. Since when wonder woman 3 Without stepping forward to the end of Henry Cavill’s tenure as Superman in favor of a new Man of Steel-focused reboot, it’s clear that there are big changes in store for DC’s shared cinematic universe. But some people online aren’t too happy with this new direction, leading Gunn to face backlash and toxic fandom.

While it’s one thing to politely express displeasure with the way DC is changing tack with its cinematic offerings, James Gunn and Peter Safran have had to deal with people who have been more extreme with their reactions. This led to Gunn posting a Chirping corner thread of DC fandom fighting back, starting with the following:

One of the things Peter and I knew when we took over DC Studios was a certain minority of people online who could be, well, loud and obnoxious, to say the least. . Our picks for the DCU are based on what we think is best for the story and best for the DC characters that have been around for nearly 85 years. Maybe these choices are great, maybe not, but they are made with true heart and integrity and always with the story in mind.

With James Gunn finished the suicide squad Yes Lollipopand Peter Safran who produced the suicide squad, water man, Shazam! and three of DC’s upcoming films in 2023, these two are quite familiar with these superhero properties, not to mention Gunn’s background in the MCU. So with their experience and over eight decades of source material to draw from, these two are simply doing everything they can to bring DC stories to the big and small screens that they believe do these beloved characters justice.

Now, of course, one can be skeptical of what James Gunn and Peter Safran are up to, and perhaps never fully agree with what they offer because they prefer the older DCEU. But there’s a fine line between sharing criticism and engaging in bullying, and while Gunn isn’t a fan of the latter, he’s made it clear that it won’t affect what he and Safran are doing. The director continues:

No one likes being bullied or insulted, but to be honest, we’ve been through a lot worse. Disrespectful protests will never affect our actions. We knew there was going to be a turbulent time when we accepted this gig, and we knew that sometimes we had to make tough, not-so-obvious decisions, especially in the wake of the controversial nature of what’s come before. But that means little to us compared to our work as artists and custodians to help create a big, broad future for DC.

As for the near future, Shazam! fury of the gods, the flash, blue beetle Yes aquaman and the lost kingdom will be released next year, all made under the old DC regime. However, beyond 2023, in addition to joker 2Not included in James Gunn and Peter Saran’s preview, the future of DC movies looks like a blank slate, and that’s likely when we get our first glimpse of what this new era will look like. . In the meantime, though, he reminds us that there’s no need for name-calling for this sort of thing.
