Line Renaud recounts her meeting with “Princess” Elizabeth, in the 1950s

The 94-year-old singer met Elizabeth II twice, once in London, before becoming queen.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II announced this Thursday upsets an entire country. Beyond the British borders, the monarch, who reigned for 70 years, also leaves an indelible memory on many people. This is particularly the case for Line Renaud, who testifies on BFMTV this Saturday, having seen her twice.

Line Renaud even crossed paths with Princess Elizabeth, before she became queen. “In ’51, I was still singing in England, Elizabeth and her sister Magareth de Ella came to see me at the Society Club, where all the high-ranking English personalities used to come,” the singer confesses.

“She was very smiling, charming and spoke French very well,” recalls Line Renaud.

“You are my Mademoiselle de Armentières”

“I met her more seriously for the second time during François Hollande’s tenure,” he continues.

He says that Queen Elizabeth II laughed when Line Renaud told her he was from Armentières. “You are my Mademoiselle de Armentières,” replied the monarch, referring to the song, also very famous across the Channel.

When Elizabeth II’s death was announced, Line Renaud felt “like everyone else great grief and pain.” “I admired this woman, she was extraordinary”, concludes the singer in front of our microphone.
