Though William Hurt died in March at the age of 71, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross will continue. In October, it was confirmed that Harrison Ford would play the role in at least two upcoming Marvel films, marking the Han Solo/Indiana Jones actor’s first foray into the superhero genre. As for why Ford decided to join the MCU, the answer he gave was, frankly, classic Harrison Ford.

Harrison Ford never pulls a punch, so if his only reason for taking over from William Hurt as Thunderbolt Ross is because he wanted to try something new, we can take his word for it. Ford now joins a small lineup of MCU redesigns, with others including Don Cheadle as James Rhodes / Terrence Howard’s War Machine and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / Edward Norton’s The Hulk. However, in this case, the Thunderbolt Ross redesign occurred due to the death of his previous cast member, so the fact that Marvel Studios made the effort to cast Ford instead of using a new/different character indicates that there likely are big things in store for Ross in Phase. 5.
What exactly will it be? We don’t officially know yet. However, in the comics, there was a moment where Thunderbolt Ross transformed into the Red Hulk, leading to speculation whether we could see Ford’s version of the character undergoing this transformation. When Ford was asked if he would wear a gray motion capture suit for one of his upcoming MCU appearances, the actor “just smiled and responded with a ‘lips closed’ sign.” Marvel has been known to go to great lengths to make sure their cast members don’t share spoilers, so we’ll have to wait for more information on whether Ford playing Red Hulk via motion capture is indeed in the cards.
