The NCIS chief offers an update to fans hoping Michael Weatherly will return as Tony DiNozzo

Now that’s the CBS drama Bull It’s over and the Jason Bull story is over, fans have been waiting for Michael Weatherly’s return NCIS to reprise the role of Tony DiNozzo. Since the actor is no longer busy elsewhere in prime time this fall, could he be back for the next twentieth season? Showrunner Steven D. Binder talked about it recently.

Michael Weatherly played the NCIS Special Agent for the first 13 seasons of the long-running CBS series. After the announcement of his departure, Weatherly revealed the reason for his departure, noting that it was a combination of Cote de Pablo’s departure and her desire to expand his roles. Steven D. Binder has an update for fans, telling TV Line how it’s possible:

Wouldn’t that be great? when [Michael] left NCIS, he told me: ‘I will never do network television again. She’d just had kids, and the hours are so long … but then that Taurus thing landed in her lap, and she was working like hell again. So I suspect, forgetting for a moment about Tony DiNozzo, that Michael Weatherly is on vacation. I’ve known him for a while and I think he needs to relax and go somewhere tropical. I haven’t told him, but we’ve talked about it over the years, and that’s what I imagine.

While these comments certainly do not guarantee that Michael Weatherly will return as DiNozzo, the NCIS the boss seems happy with the idea! Fans just need to remember that Weatherly basically went straight to Bull following NCISYes Bull just finished in spring. It makes sense that Weatherly wants to take a break and relax before getting into anything.

This isn’t the first time Steven D. Binder has commented on Michael Weatherly’s possible return. Before BullSeries finale in May, the showrunner expressed interest in the actor’s return NCIS. He said that although he had talked to her over the years, Bull This meant that the timing was going to be complicated. Hopefully those conversations will continue now that the show is over and Weatherly is more open.

Meanwhile, as the series prepares to air next season, the show could offer references to another missing fan favorite. NCIS. Based on other comments from Binder, fans can finally get an update on what Pauley Perrette’s Abby Sciuto has been up to since her release. Though Perrette was adamant about not returning NCIS (especially now that she has retired from acting), at least getting an update on what Abby has been up to since getting injured would be a pleasure as the series progresses.

As for what’s to come sooner rather than later, NCIS will start its twentieth season with a crossover with NCIS: Hawaii. Some were hoping there would also be a crossover with NCIS: Los Angeles, so let’s cross our fingers that it’s a little bit later in the respective show seasons. It should also be interesting to see if Tony DiNozzo returns and how he would play a role in the series.

Do not get lost NCIS premieres Monday, September 19 at 9:00 PM EST on CBS! Check out 24 News Bulletin’s 2022 TV show to see what else you can expect in the coming months!
