The world of DC cinema has been in turmoil for the past few weeks. James Gunn and Peter Safran recently took over DC’s film division, and we’ve already seen some significant changes in the projected future of film projects. This caused a lot of backlash from disgruntled fans of the new management, but suicide squad Director David Ayer says he considers negativity from fans a passion.
James Gunn has been quite public and open on Twitter since taking over as the helm of DC Films and in a recent thread on Chirping talked about the process of coming up with the new plan for DC movies. He also says that he was well aware from the start that there was going to be a flood of negative responses from one corner of the fandom. In response, David Ayer has come to the defense of these fans, as he claims that negativity is simply a form of intense passion for the characters.
I’ve always seen negativity as a testament to the power of these characters. There is something deeply mythological about them that ignites passion on both sides. https://t.co/FmJyOlh5GBDecember 20, 2022
Of the various people involved in DC film projects in recent years, David Ayer has had perhaps one of the best experiences, at least when it comes to dealing with fans on social media. While yesterday suicide squad was a tense production that didn’t go his way, fans overwhelmingly supportive of his vision, calling for a “cut from yesterday” of suicide squad the same way the fans pushed and finally got, Zach Snyder’s Justice League.
And apparently any negative feedback Ayer received, he saw as coming from a place of passion and therefore didn’t take it personally. And she’s certainly not wrong. DC Comics contains some of the most iconic characters not only in comics but also in fiction.
While Gunn and Safran have only been running DC Films for a few weeks, a lot has happened. Henry Cavill, who was previously believed to be returning to play Superman, is once again absent from the role, as James Gunn is apparently working on a new Superman movie. Dwayne Johnson also made it clear that while there may still be a future for his black adam in the new plan, the character is not in the short-term plan. Of course, for passionate fans of these characters and actors, this will be frustrating news.
As we begin to find out what we won’t see in future DC movies, James Gunn says we’ll start seeing what it will include early next year. One thing’s for sure, whatever happens, there are likely to be fans with passionate responses.
