Attention! The following contains SPOILERS for the Star Trek: Prodigy episode “Supernova, Part 1”. Read at your own risk!
It might seem ridiculous to suggest that anything about “Supernova Part 1” is funny, especially this close Star Trek: ProdigySeason 1 finale of . from and the crew could not stop the activation of the weapon, and just when it seemed The seer could be influenced to help them stop him, he was killed by absence. The moment was one of prodigyThe heaviest scenes yet, but it was also a hilarious moment for the showrunners and writers as they worked on the penultimate episode of season one.
I had the opportunity to speak with Star Trek: Prodigythe showrunners Kevin Yes Dan Hagemann about how the children’s show handled the very adult death of The Diviner, and learned a hilarious little tidbit about the issues they had while writing the episode. The brothers explained that while they usually had a lot of leeway in what they showed, the penultimate episode had a huge problem that they didn’t acknowledge until someone else pointed it out. Kevin Hageman shared that while they knew The Diviner’s fate, they didn’t really think about the reality of his corpse clinging to the bridge in the back half of the episode:
It was an accident. When we first wrote it, our director pointed out that at the end there’s this dramatic confrontation with the Asencia stuff, and The Diviner’s body is there the whole time on deck. We’re like, ‘Oh my God, we can’t afford this.
If The Diviner had finally recovered from his injuries, perhaps that wouldn’t have been a problem. Naturally, The Diviner dies midway through the episode and realizing his dead body would hang from the bridge while the rest of the chaos unfolded, Star Trek: ProdigyThe team had to be creative.
Luckily, they are responsible for creating the Vau N’Akat species and were able to make a change that will ultimately affect the species in the future. Dan Hageman explained how this issue changed the Vau N’Akat tradition forever:
So now the Val N’Akat, in canonical terms, when they die, they evaporate.
Had The Diviner been one of the many evil species previously established in Star Trek: Traveler, prodigy he could have had a bigger issue on his hands. Now, assuming we see more Vau N’Akat appear in the future, there will always be a way to deal with corpses! It’s a dark bonus for a children’s show, I suppose, but it’s a great way to ensure the action continues without children being scarred by the lifeless husks of the Vau N’Akat when they activate their Paramount+ subscriptions.
The good news is if another nearby star Trek The series chooses to feature Vau N’Akat, a death scene that shouldn’t look too weird in real life. The world of star Trek it’s filled with unique species and other weird stuff, so while this was a one-time fix, it’s right in line with this franchise as a whole.
Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 ends on Paramount+ (opens in a new tab) Thursday 29 December. The current situation isn’t good for the crew and Starfleet as a whole, so we’ll have to see exactly what happens in the finale and how that sets the stage for season two.
