Warning: SPOILERS for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever I’m ahead!
After the end of Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverThe main story, the emotional post-credits scene revealed that a boy we saw briefly at the beginning of the film was Toussaint, the son of Nakia and the late T’Challa, and his Wakanda name was also T’Challah . Ryan Coogler had previously informed him about 24 News Bulletin wakanda forever It was always going to star the former Black Panther’s son, but now the director has shared how this post-credits reveal was originally going to be part of the main storyline before Chadwick Boseman’s death.
Before Chadwick Boseman died in August 2020 at the age of 43, the plan was black panther 2 to be “a character study that delves into” T’Challa’s “psyche and situation,” and it was hinted that our hero would learn of his son’s existence after being pieced together by The Blip. Ryan Coogler confirmed this to be the case in a conversation with The New York Times saying the following about how black panther 2 it was conceived as a “father-son story”:
In the script, T’Challa was a father who had an enforced five-year absence from his son’s life. The first scene was an animated sequence. You hear Nakia talking to Toussaint. He said, “Tell me what you know about your father. You realize he doesn’t know that he fathered him was Black Panther. He never met him and Nakia remarried a Haitian. Then we snap back to reality and it’s the night everyone comes back from the Blip. You see T’Challa meeting the boy for the first time.
Remember that T’Challa was part of half of all life in the universe that Thanos wiped out in the end Avengers: Infinity Warbut five years later, Smart Hulk brought all those people back to life with Infinity Stones recovered from The Time Heist Avengers ending. Meanwhile, Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia was among the survivors of The Snap and gave birth to her child shortly after T’Challa’s disappearance. When T’Challa learns he has a son after suddenly being revived, that boy now discovers his heroic lineage.
Ryan Coogler then shared that after T’Challa returned and met his son, black panther 2 would have jumped forward three years and the story would have seen the titular superhero and his offspring embark on a journey together that would still have involved Namor the submarine, played by Tenoch Huerta, as the main antagonist, although he and Julia’s roles as Valentina Allegra Fontaine of Louis-Dreyfus in the story would have been slightly different than what we got in the final product. As Coogler explained:
We had some crazy scenes for Chad, man. Our code name for the movie was “Summer Break,” and the movie was about a summer the boy spends with his father. On their eighth birthday, they have a ritual where they go to the mountains and have to live off the land. But something happens and T’Challa has to go save the world with her son by her side.
After the death of Chadwick Boseman, black panther 2 was redesigned to follow Letitia Wright’s Shuri dealing with her brother’s death and ultimately succeeding him as Black Panther. According to producer Nate Moore, Shuri was the only candidate considered to become the new Black Panther, albeit revealed at the end of wakanda forever, following the death of Angela Bassett’s Ramonda, it is Winston Duke’s M’Baku who will now rule Wakanda, unlike Shuri who also sits on the throne. Shuri also now knows she has a nephew, and while it’s unclear if Toussaint will appear again in the MCU, we do at least know that he’s carrying on his father’s legacy, even if that doesn’t mean he’ll be donning his Panther costume. Black inside. . .a few years
