Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Angela Bassett Reveals How Exhausting Filming Her Big Stunt Sequence Was

spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Before.

In black panther: wakanda forever, Angela Bassett’s character Queen Ramonda had one of the saddest scenes in the film when she sacrificed herself to save young Riri Williams when the Wakandan Palace sank. Although the actress talked about calling director Ryan Coogler for killing off his character, he now explains how exhausting it was to film the huge stunt sequence that accompanied his character’s tragic death.

The tragic scene involved not only Bassett’s emotional strength, but also his physical strength. while he talks to DAY the actress opened up about how they pulled off the scene and went into detail about her stunt work and the “long wet day” of filming.

My God. Well, they try to make you comfortable by putting you in the underwear of a wetsuit. A neoprene wetsuit. Then you have this gorgeous silk organza, whatever, purple dress over it. Ruth planned this because she will look a certain way when you are underwater. Those other glorious suits wouldn’t look good underwater. So you have it with you. And they’re throwing water bombs at you, spraying you, hour after hour.

It feels like a lot to use at the same time. Looking at the Marvel movies in order I think it’s safe to say that some of the Wakandan wardrobe is the most elaborate and opulent, particularly Bassett’s costumes. Her massive gowns are stunning and really showcase how majestic the Queen of Wakanda is, but I imagine putting on the dress and a wetsuit, and getting wet, would be pretty tough. Especially considering how long it took to film.

In addition to everything Bassett had to wear, she also talked about how long it took to film the water stunts. Although the actress was the first “mortified” by Romanda’s story , and struggled to film the sequence, he noticed how well it turned out. She explained:

Do hours of French [with no pause for meals], so you don’t have a break in between. You are constantly wet for about 12 hours straight. You try to have lunch on your knees, you try to take a nap, and yet you have this wet suit and this wet dress. The worst part is when you have to go to the girls bathroom and take off your wetsuit. It was very interesting, no. But all for the good, all for the glory, all for the beauty. It looks much cuter than before.

While he didn’t like the idea at first and the shoot was difficult or exhausting, Bassett ended up loving the way it happened, and the timing served the overall story wonderfully. as one of the writers said this moment was important to Shuri’s backstory , and helps viewers understand why the young princess seeks revenge when she fights Namor at the film’s end. So even though it was difficult to film on multiple layers, it was essential to the black Panther continuation.
