Melanie Chisholm, better known as Mel C, will not sing on Polish television. The rights of LGBT people have been particularly threatened in Poland in recent years. “LGBTI people have been increasingly attacked by politicians in power, religious leaders and other public figures in Poland,” the International Gay and Lesbian Association notes on its site, which lists the various attacks over the years against LGBT rights.
“This has resulted in a dangerous and false portrayal of LGBTI people as a threat to children and as a threat to Christianity.”
In September 2021, under pressure from the European Commission, which had launched infringement proceedings against the country, Poland renounced its “LGBT ideology-free zones” decreed by certain local authorities. A hundred local authorities representing around a third of Polish territory had adopted there since 2019 a resolution of “anti-LGBT ideology” or a “charter of family rights”.
Mel C has released eight solo albums since splitting with the Spice Girls in 2001. In 2019, he released the single high heelsin collaboration with drag queen collective Sink the Pink.
