The Sopranos’ Michael Imperioli Recalls Getting Into A Car Accident On His First Day On Set And James Gandolfini’s Reaction

Michael Imperioli caused a stir with his role in the white lotus Season 2 lately, and there’s a chance he could be considered for awards next year. Of course, the veteran actor is no stranger to high-profile television on HBO, having shot to fame years ago as a member of the soprano problem . It was also clear from the pilot episode that the star had some good acting skills, and her Emmy-winning performance as Christopher Moltisanti only got better from there. However, things went a bit sour for the actor as, on his first day, he apparently got into a car accident on set with his he co-star James Gandolfini. And the late Tony Soprano actor had an interesting response to the dangerous situation.

Michael Imperioli’s Christopher quickly established himself by having a very close relationship with his “uncle” Tony, and for the first part of the series, the cheeky young man served as Soprano’s chauffeur. This proved to be a challenge for Imperioli, as the actor did not have a driver’s license at the time. The star recently recalled that on her first day on set, she had to perform a tricky stunt during a scene with James Gandolfini. Unfortunately, things have taken a dangerous turn:

The first day of work, I had to wear it. I didn’t have a driver’s license, you know, but I didn’t tell anyone because I wanted the job. Because Christopher’s job was to guide Tony. But Michael didn’t know how to drive. But I’m like, well, how hard could it be? I had to back up to the sidewalk with trees on both sides and extras running off the road. Give the dialogues to Tony Soprano. Thinking about the future. I mean, it’s hard to do. Even if you can drive, which I can now. I did it like four times the fifth time. Boom, right in the tree. The airbags go off, Jim’s head snaps back.

I can’t imagine being an actor and having a car accident in the middle of my first day on the job. Add to that the fact that this situation also involved the production’s main star, and you’re in for a big mess. Michael Imperioli, who reflected on the incident as he appeared on Who is talking to Chris Wallace? (through People ) went on to say that his actions caused quite a bit of chaos on set. But what really stands out for him more than two decades later is James Gandolfini’s reaction in the midst of the ordeal:

It’s the first day I’ve met the boy. There is smoke, people are running. And I’m like, ‘I’m going to get fired, man, this is really bad. I look at him and he laughs hysterically.

The three-time Emmy winner certainly had an interesting sense of humor, but his laugh probably signaled to his co-star that he was fine after the incident. And to the credit of her then 31-year-old colleague, she eventually retired from performing. It was actually part of a chase sequence considered one of the most iconic moments in the film. soprano pilot. Check out the brutal and somewhat funny scene below:

Like their characters, Michael Imperioli and James Gandolfini became very close over their six seasons of work on the beloved HBO drama. Imperioli praised Gandolfini in the years following his sudden death at age 51 in 2013, as did her co-stars. Adriana La Cerva, actress Drea de Matteo once recalled how Gandolfini wrote big checks to his colleagues after learning they had not received their fair share after contract negotiations. The famous actor is absolutely missed by his fans and collaborators, and it’s always nice when Imperioli and de Matteo share stories about him.

I’m glad that Michael Imperioli and James Gandolfini came out of that car crash in good shape, and not just because they continued to produce incredible work. One can only imagine how terrifying it was for Imperioli at the time, but, today, it’s honestly a fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdote from one of the most perfect shows to ever grace a television screen.
