It was a long wait, but we finally got to see the action live. The little Mermaid in the form of its first trailer, starring lead actress Halle Bailey. After initially being the target of Racist reaction at his Disney casting the young star is now receiving praise for her portrayal of a classic Mermaid song that appears in the trailer. Unfortunately, soon after the trailer is released, some of her fans who use Twitter go so far as to troll the original Ariel actress.
Given the reaction that ensued her casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel in 2019 it is good to see that it is getting the recognition it deserves. However, I’m not sure many thought the Twitter users who gave the young star would criticize Jodi Benson. A viral example is Twitter post below, where a fan puts the two mermaids next to each other and compares the Grammy Awards:
32 Grammy 0 Grammy pic.twitter.com/ETTHHgLBsUSeptember 10, 2022
However, the information in the message is very exaggerated and just plain inaccurate. The Chloe x Halle alum actually has 5 Grammy nominations, but has yet to pick up a win. The poster claims that Halle has 32 Grammy Awards and the original Disney film doesn’t. However, it’s important to note that although Jodi Benson didn’t have any of these awards, the original film won one of the coveted awards and was nominated for two more. The person who posted this may be under the illusion that Halle will finally get the trophy after the release of her live-action Disney movie.
a fan of The little Mermaid she managed to send her compliments to Halle Bailey without taking Jodi Benson. They released one of the most iconic scenes from the 1989 animated film and said they can’t wait to see Bailey recreate it. Take a look below:
I figured Halle would recreate it and yes they’ll have to put me to sleep at the theater pic.twitter.com/r8vKeR62xESeptember 10, 2022
Although this fan could technically have enthusiastic thoughts for both of them Mermaid actresses, the same cannot be said for all the fans who responded to the tweet. In fact, fans are somewhat critical of Jodi Benson for singing her in the shared clip, with one fan calling her singing meaninglessly in a response. peek . This is exactly what the fan says:
Halle went to eat this because Ariel is a bit flat
Another Twitter user responded to the same clip as the original Ariel the same way, beating up Jodi Benson and her voice. So said the Twitter user in his peek which was followed by two crying emoticons:
this actress had a hard time with these notes
However, it’s worth noting that for every negative comment on the OG Disney star’s work as Ariel’s original voice, there are probably 20 complementary to both her and Halle Bailey. In fact, a Twitter user responded to one of the negative comments with an aggressive love message for both actresses, calling those who would drop one actress to cheer on the other. This is what was said in the enthusiast peek Exactly:
No. What we’re not going to do is ditch the iconic Jodie Benson to cheer on Halle. They are both extraordinarily talented and Jodie is Ariel. Kiss my ass.
While fans are quick to pick their side when it comes to the two Ariels and arguing, there doesn’t seem to be any competition between Halle Bailey and Jodi Benson. Benson expressed his full support for Bailey so I would be surprised if Bailey had anything negative to say about his predecessor.
Although we won’t be diving into the sea with Halle Bailey as Ariel until when The little Mermaid the new live-action version will be released in theaters on May 26, 2023, there are many disney movie coming soon wait while you wait.
