Although Criminal minds Originally wrapped up less than three years ago, it didn’t take long for CBS’ procedural broadcast revival to come to fruition. when Criminal Minds: Evolution it was announced, it was revealed that most of the cast would be returning for the new, more serialized story arc. Matthew Gray Gubler as Dr. Spencer Reid was noticeably absent, of course, but showrunner Erica Messer has opened the door to hope in the possibility of Reid’s return.
the first of Criminal Minds: Evolution explained where Reid’s Matt Simmons and Daniel Henney are, in small part, saying they’re doing a job that can’t really be discussed in full. Messer told the TV insider that the general lack of information serves a purpose, and brought up the idea that fans will hear more about Reid and Simmons in the future, which may not be all. In his words:
Can’t say much about it. We won’t hear much more about what they do this year, but what they did will come into play next year. We both wanted them back, and both had other plans, and we only had a very short window to shoot this year. It was literally logistics; we couldn’t catch them.
Though fans may not see Reid in person here in this first season of Criminal Minds: Evolution, getting more information on where it is should keep everyone in line for now. Not much was mentioned in the first five episodes aside from shared reminiscences, but it looks like the team moving closer to breaking the serial killer ring could shed some light on Reid and Simmons’ mission, in whatever capacity they may be. . . Or perhaps someone from assistant director Doug Bailey’s team will provide more insight into the duo.
It’s definitely a disappointment that Matthew Gray Gubler couldn’t return Evolution, but Eric Messer is hoping something will work out in the future, and seems to imply that fans should hold on to that hope. If schedules line up for the best and Paramount+ orders a second season of the revival, Reid’s return could easily come to life. However, even if that doesn’t happen, she says she and everyone is supporting him and Daniel Henney on their respective projects after…Criminal minds. Here’s how he said it:
But we all talk on a regular basis and fingers crossed that something works but we support what Matthew and Daniel do when they are not with us. And it’s really bittersweet that we couldn’t get them for the big arc this season.
We definitely miss Matthew Gray Gubler on the Criminal Minds: Evolution square. Her former co-star and fan-favorite shipmate AJ Cook had a sweet response to a recent Instagram post from him and Aisha Tyler, both of whom clearly missed the actor as she grounded him in his recent escapades. It’s unclear if MGG will return to her beloved role in the future, but it’s nice to know she stays in touch with some, if not all of the cast, and Erica Messer and crew did everything they could to bring her back. Even if Gubler and Henney aren’t there Criminal Minds: Evolution, fans still love the Paramount+ series. Since the episodes are longer on the streamer than on CBS and the season is still just as creepy, Criminal mindsThe return was definitely refreshing.
