great start to skirmishers. Omar Sy welcomed the first figures for his film about the broken fate of the Senegalese skirmishers, which registered more than 55,506 admissions (including 13,193 in previews) during its first day of operation.
“Thank you,” he wrote on Twitter. “Immense gratitude to those who went to see skirmishers yesterday. Proof that together we can tell the common story with our multiple memories. You make me even more proud to have brought you this movie. You are my strength and my France.”
Forgotten by French politicians
Premiered this Wednesday after being presented in the Official Section -but out of competition- of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, skirmishers tells the story of a father and son torn from their Fulani people and sent to fight in France during World War I.
Forgotten by French politicians for decades, Senegalese skirmishers and their heirs still today deplore the lack of recognition, particularly due to lower pensions than their French brothers in arms.
“Today our generation needs this story for our construction, to make history, to know how we are built in relation to these two countries,” Omar Sy, the film’s co-producer, told AFP.
