While Billie Eilish turned 21 just days before the holiday season kicked off, the singer accomplished more before she reached the legal drinking age in the United States than most could dream of in a lifetime. The celebrity just toured the world, even becoming the youngest performer to headline Coachella as well as providing the latest James Bond theme song and winning an Oscar for it. As fans wait for what’s in store for the entertainer this year, the singer opened up about her relationship to her physical health and environmental activism.
During Billie Eilish’s latest interview, in which she covered January’s fashion, the singer opened up about a longstanding “rage” at her body following a growth plate injury to her hip that he quit and it led her to walk away from her passion for dance. She shared that the injury happened right after her single “Ocean Eyes” put her on the map and effectively “replaced dancing.” In her words:
I went through my teenage years hating myself and all that stupidity. A lot has come from my anger at my body and my anger at the pain it has caused me and all that I have lost because of the things that have happened to it.
Over the years, Eilish has suffered numerous injuries before recently discovering that she has a condition called “hypermobility.” With this knowledge, the singer and her family learned that anything they did to ease her pain wasn’t helping her. Eilish said this:
I felt like my body had been gassing me for years. I had to go through a process of saying, my body is actually me. And it’s not to get me.
Over the years, Eilish has opened up with your relationship to your body image , which can certainly be related to how one feels about oneself. The singer previously said she has “terrible” body image, and having the eyes of the world on her certainly hasn’t helped. Like many celebrities, Eilish has put her name on her clothes, including in collaborations with Nike. His latest shoe from the iconic sneaker brand is made from recycled materials. The singer has been open about her passion for environmental activism, but she admitted to having a complicated relationship with him:
I don’t want to parade like “Look at me!” I make a difference. I just want to make a difference and shut up. You shouldn’t be manufacturing products. You shouldn’t be selling anything. It’s just grosser to go to the dump one day. I know it. But no one will stop wearing clothes. No one will stop doing things. So I do it as best I can.
Many celebrities like it Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner have been at the center of a private jet controversy last year which revealed that they were the main contributors to CO2 emissions. Billie Eilish, meanwhile, refuses to fly privately and has found “unusual ways to travel, according to Vogue. Eilish’s decisions would have saved 8.8 million liters of water and neutralized more than 15,000 tons of CO2 by going this route. Eilish also had this to say about how she views her activism:
I spent all my effort trying not to get in people’s faces. Because people don’t react well to that. It paints a bad picture of the causes you believe in, because you’re upsetting everyone. I’m not going to shove the information down people’s throats just yet. Rather, I will not tell you what to do. I’ll just tell you why I’m doing this. But you’re also a bad person if you don’t.
