Why was James Cameron told that aliens would be “career-ending” for him?

It’s rare in Hollywood to create a sequel to a film that garners as much or more attention than the original. It’s even rarer when the sequel in question is the predecessor of one of the best sci-fi movies of all time, Ridley Scott Extraterrestrial. Yet that’s just what James Cameron did with his third directorial effort, aliens. While the 1986 sequel didn’t remove all of the horror feel and tension of the original, it did remove the slasher vibes. If it goes wrong, it’s all up to you. It’s the end of a career. I said, ‘Yes, but… I like it.’ Maybe I was a dumb fan, but I could see it so clearly in my head that I had to.

Now, nearly 40 years later, it is obvious that James Cameron was right to pursue his vision. aliens is a rare example of a sequel living up to the original as it forges its own path. The second film in the Xenomorph series is the gold standard and everyone’s benchmark Extraterrestrial follow up tried and ultimately fell short of the job. Ridley Scott attempted to return to the series with the much maligned Prometheus Yup Alien: Covenant but it couldn’t carry the same magic seen in the Cameron-led first sequel. What else to say: never underestimate James Cameron’s vision?
