Today we’re so used to seeing so many superhero movies every year that it’s hard to remember a time when Marvel adaptations weren’t common. Included between Marvel films not associated with the MCU dates back to 2003 Helmet Directed by Ang Lee and starring Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott and Josh Lucas. When Lucas recently reflected on the upcoming 20-year Marvel film, he recalled that the director of him was “frustrated.”
Helmet it was the first film adaptation of the Marvel comic book character after Lou Ferrigno previously portrayed the hero in the 1970s and 1980s for television. When Josh Lucas spoke about his time playing Glenn Talbot in the film with the reading list the actor said this:
If they ask me who my favorite directors are, I almost always answer that my number one is Ang. [Lee]. I don’t use that word genius, but I think he’s a really brilliant director, if not brilliant. As you say, he was swinging towards the rafters [‘Hulk’]. I don’t think the technology was exactly where his brain was. And if you look at what he did with “Life of Pi,” he managed to knock it out. I think technology has evolved and he is one of the people who has driven the evolution of technology. I know that he was pushing the team of people who were in the CGI of “Hulk” to do something that technically may not yet be able to be at the level that he wanted. And I think he was very frustrated that this movie couldn’t get what he wanted and what he had in mind.
Ang Lee is an incredibly talented director who was thrilled with his epic Crouching Tiger of the Hidden Dragon when Helmet. The 2003 film was among the 20 highest-grossing films of 2003, for Mojo ticket office , and received critical acclaim for its ambition and style, but never became a Marvel fan favorite. Luke continued:
The way he morphed, the way he turned the pages, I mean, he made a visual comic. And I haven’t seen anyone do it like that, think about it, that was twenty years ago, right? So there’s a fantastic auteur director under this monster, one of the first Marvel films. I have nothing but respect for her.
Lucas makes a valid point about early Marvel movies when he talks about Ang Lee. The technology to display superhuman abilities like the Hulk didn’t exist yet. One can imagine if he wanted to bring a character as good as Bruce Banner to the screen, but the CGI wasn’t in the right place yet, I’d get the feeling Lee was doing it too. However, the late Stan Lee, who co-created the character, really felt the reason. Why didn’t the first two Hulk movies work? it was because they made the Hulk “too powerful”.
Lee would not continue with the Helmet affiliate, however I had an idea ready for the sequel . Marvel would keep doing it all over again with Edward Norton The Incredible Hulk in 2008 before switching roles for 2012 The Avengers with our MCU Hulk, Mark Ruffalo . Norton and Ruffalo also apparently joke about being the Hulk, with Ruffalo once. saying they think he’s “our generation’s Hamlet” and is definitely to be done again. And, I mean, it was something like this the great mcu series she hulks but he’s another comic book hero, of course.
If you’re feeling nostalgic for another era of Marvel movies, you can check out the ones from 2003. Helmet with a Hulu subscription . And we’ll keep you posted on what’s next for the Hulk in the MCU here at 24 News Bulletin.
