Glen Powell has been on the rise for a number of years, but I think we can all agree that he’s really hit it high now, thanks to his role in Top Gun: nonconformist. The 34-year-old actor squashed the role of Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin, allowing him to completely prone to idiocy . However, in real life, Powell is very respectful and loves the Tom Cruise aviation franchise. It’s this level of reverence that probably prompted the star to add a subtle Easter egg to the film, and it’s perfectly reminiscent of the OG movie.
One of the sequel’s iconic scenes is the meeting that takes place in the fictional Hard Deck bar at the beginning of the film. It is during this portion of the film that Maverick’s team of Top Gun graduates come together. The always arrogant executioner is shown engaging in activities such as darts and billiards for some time. However, it also turns out that during this hilarious sequence, Glen Powell paid homage to the classic 80s film by dialing a specific number on the set jukebox:
I don’t think anyone realized I did it until post-production, like Joe [Kosinski, Maverick’s director] He called me and said, ‘Hey, did you do 86?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ve just done it.
The number in question refers to the year the original film was released in theaters: 1986. It’s a clever nod to the hidden numbers partly alum and based on what he said Eastern Time, it was so understated that even director Joseph Kosinski couldn’t catch it in real time. Kudos to the star for finding a great way to honor one of the most influential blockbusters in cinematic history.
Joining the ranks of Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer is definitely an honor and believe it or not, Glen Powell almost missed his chance. Powell originally tested for the role of Bradley “Gallo” Bradshaw , which ended up falling to the stellar Miles Teller. But Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and others were impressed with Powell’s auditions and basically gave him a new role. Even if the actor was about to let the offer go through. some wise words from Cruise convinced him don’t walk away from him Mission Impossible star became something of a mentor to her young co-star, even giving her advice when it came to have in Dissident and drama Dedication .
Thanks to his breakthrough in the blockbuster, Glen Powell now seems to be in a privileged position within the entertainment industry.
