M3GAN Director Was ‘Disappointed’ Viral Dance Scene Was In Trailer, But I Disagree

January was once a dumping ground for films that studios had little faith in. The titles were buried under the wave of the big Christmas movie, or the plethora of award contenders vying for attention. Then one day, studio execs realized that moviegoers wanted to see good movies in theaters all year round, and therefore better movies, like this weekend’s surprise horror blockbuster. M3GAN – began to reach the top of the program and posting impressive figures At the box office The film may not be among the best horror movies it has never been done. But M3GAN he understood his audience and played directly in front of them. Therefore I respectfully disagree with M3GAN director Gerard Johnstone in one of the film’s most memorable scenes featured in the trailer.

The scene in question has been a viral meme on social media for weeks. It shows AI M3GAN doll starting a strange dance in front of someone in a long corridor. The dance involves arm flapping and somersaulting, and is great fun… both in and out of context. But speaking with digital spydirector Gerard Johnstone has expressed his disappointment with the M3GAN marketing team put this moment in the trailers for the film, stating:

I was really worried when I saw the trailer and saw how much dancing there was, I was like, ‘Oh my God, you give it away and you have to cut it.’ I wanted it to be a surprise. I wanted it to be a really fun surprise. Luckily we had two screenings and I was able to sit in a room and watch people really react for the first time without knowing what they were going to see. So I was a little bummed, but the film needs to be marketed, and it was fun to see that it could be re-released and accepted.

I understand where Gerard Johnstone is coming from. He is very close to the film. He saw this scene as a surprise and probably anticipated a huge reaction from the M3GAN crowd when the doll, who had been killing people up to that point, suddenly showed off some meme-worthy dance moves. . what if, M3GAN Star Allison Williams saw your viral posts and she loves them.

But for me, the inclusion of the dance scene in the M3GAN The trailer made me realize that this movie was going to offer more than tired clichés and Chucky rip-offs. (We want these franchises to cross paths in the future, don’t we? This is the present freddy vs. jason. we must see who would win in this fight .) He told me that the film and its creators had a sense of humor about what might have been too serious a premise, and that they understood the task of embracing the field that was inherent in that premise. The dance scene told me that M3GAN it had the potential to be fun and crazy, not hard work.

Here is the scene in question:

makes me want to go see M3GAN again. And it appears that Gerard Johnstone has made the decision, as he told Digital Spy:

When it comes to the trailer and stuff like that, I really have to trust Universal. When you’re making the movie, it’s exhausting being on top of every decision. So that’s pretty cool [to] Sit down and say, “Okay, do what you can.” I know there’s more to the movie than people haven’t seen yet, so I feel good about it.

And it worked. Weather M3GAN he could not dethrone Avatar: the path of water topping the box office charts, rode a wave of positive reviews (included the official 24 News Bulletin review ) to a $30 million opening… huge for a low-budget horror film that’s not part of an existing franchise. This bodes well for the state of horror films to come, which is why you’ll want to check out our conversation with James Wan and Jason Blum on terror in 2023 where they discuss weird horror ideas, the lack of subgenre tendencies in horror, and their desire to keep horror as weird as possible.
