Although Mr. Feeny was everyone’s favorite teacher, boy meets world Fans also have a special place in their hearts for young Mr. Jonathan Turner. Viewers loved the modern English teacher on a motorcycle, played by Anthony Tyler Quinn. He was another stable adult figure for the younger members of the boy meets world chosen for a few seasons. The last time viewers saw Turner on the show he was lying in a hospital bed in season four. Interestingly, Quinn has now revealed that he almost joined the cast during season 1, ultimately explaining why his character was written off.
Before boy meets world aired, Quinn had met series creator Michael Jacobs while working on a television pilot. Sadly, the project was scrapped, but Jacobs has never forgotten the sitcom veteran. He called the actor shortly after the failed pilot and asked him to work together again. When he appeared on Pod meets the worldQuinn went on to reveal that the BMW the creator wanted him to read for an important role: the father of Cory Matthews:
He says, “I’m working on this new show.” His name is Project Ben Savage. I said ‘Yeah, I think that’s what Willie [Garson] he was talking to me and said, “I want you to read dad’s diary.” My only problem is that I think you will be playing too young. But we will do it anyway.
Then he almost played Alan Mathews, because the star also met with season 1 and 2 director David Trainor and the producers. She also ended up reading with Cory Matthews Ben Savage himself, to see if they would make a good TV father-son duo. The veteran actor went on to say:
So I read and they thought it was really cool and funny and everything. She said, ‘We want to have you online, but I want you to age and crossdress.’ So I did and arrived at ABC on Avenue des Stars. That’s where I met Ben. Because Ben was in there [the] network right now … He and I read together on dad’s side. We did very well. It was very funny.
Unfortunately, the baby put the world the alum didn’t end up playing patriarch Matthews. However, he was still on Michael Jacobs’ mind when the producer invited him to lunch before the second season. The comedy impresario offered the actor a chance to read for Mr. Turner. Anthony Tyler Quinn revealed that Jacobs was initially embarrassed to audition, as he warned Quinn that he might not have much to do as part of a casting call. However, this didn’t bother the actor at all.
During the podcast, the conversation turned to Turner’s mysterious disappearance in season 4. Co-host Danielle Fishel said fans had asked her what happened to her character, and Quinn has grappled with the same question these past few years. . They BMW The former student later revealed that Jacobs revealed Mr. Turner’s original plans in Season 4 after finishing Season 3:
I saw Michael Jacobs across the stage and I want to congratulate him and [ask] What do you think about how my character develops and how he interacts with everyone? He says ‘Great. We think everything is great. We are really excited and can’t wait for season 4. He shared with me what he wanted to do with me for season 4. They wanted to deepen our relationship a bit, Rider… So I was really excited for season 4 .
But something changed between filming the season three finale and season four, as Mr. Turner was only in a handful of episodes that season. With that, the star opened up more about what led to his departure from the classic sitcom after season 4, and it appears to be due to a change requested by the powers that be:
It was late March 1996. Remember that conversation because in June 1996 I got a call from Michael Jacobs and he said, ‘Okay. I have bad news. And I was ‘Okay. Oh, oh.’ He says “so, you’re not coming back for season 4. Maybe sparingly like five or four episodes.” But definitely not season 5. You won’t be coming back. Now, I understand the concept that there is no job security in show business, but this seemed to be a game changer. Because we had a conversation two months ago that everything was fine. So I’m just like, ‘What happened?’ and says, “So the network and the studio came to us last minute with some changes.” They said now the kids are going to high school and we want to explore the whole dynamic so we’re going to change it. it was a bit unexpected [and] last minute so we couldn’t do anything to save it. He says, “That’s what it is,” and that’s it.
Anthony Tyler Quinn admitted he was sad about her departure, but it had nothing to do with the job itself. I missed not being around the cast and crew anymore. They someone like me The actor likened his dismissal from the show to “getting kicked out of the house.” After breaking the shocking news, Jacobs gave the Mr. Turner actor his blessing to pursue other acting jobs. Though he would later find himself in a precarious situation during pilot season, as he explained:
This is where the story gets interesting. It’s June 1996. Fast forward to February 1997. I was preparing for pilot season in 1997 because I had to get a job… So I was very close to having this pilot who had auditioned for Fox. I jumped all the hoops and wanted to take me to [the] study and meet everyone out there on the net. And I thought ‘This is great’… So they’re going to take me to the network. I got a call from my manager and he said, “We have a big problem. And I say, ‘Of course, there’s a big problem. Why shouldn’t there be a big deal? I’m like, ‘What’s the matter?’ It’s like, ‘Disney won’t let you out of your contract. Honestly, I was confused because it’s been nine months since I got that call from Michael… I was like, “Boys meet world” and he was like, “Yes.” I said, “You know as well as I do that they called me and said they were going to fire me. He said, “Well, they say your contract is still on and they won’t let you out.”
Though the circumstances were tense, Quinn didn’t care much because he was happy to be back Lads or that Fox negotiates or buys its contract with Disney. Even with his relaxed demeanor, he understood the consequences that could ensue if the two studies disagreed. At one point, her manager floated the idea of suing the House of Mouse. Thankfully, things didn’t go that far, as the company terminated him from his contract.
We still can’t help but scratch our heads thinking about the decision to ax Anthony Tyler Quinn’s Turner from the show. At the very least, the actor was able to reprise the role years later in the Disney Channel sequel series. girl meets world. While it honestly sucks that things turned out the way they did, it’s good to at least have some clarification. It’s also nice to know that so many people bonded with the character and are still talking about it today.
