Attention! The following contains spoilers for the breakthrough Season 1 episode “Beeper Dr. Song”. Read at your own risk!
breakthroughThe team finally has the elusive Janice Calavicci in custody, but wasn’t exactly a source of information when questioned. While Janice was largely uncooperative throughout the episode, she decided to share some key advice with addison. He walked away from the situation distrusting Janice, but I think there’s reason to take the advice, even if Janice can’t be trusted.
Weather nice song spent the episode stuck in the 90s as a doctor trying to save the lives of three different people, Addison received stern advice from Janice, who basically advised her to stop asking Ben for more information about what she remembers before starting and instead he also needed Ben to keep quiet about the things he remembers:
I need you to tell Ben to stop talking to you. You must enter this imaging chamber and you must tell him that from now on, whatever he remembers, he must keep to himself… You say you trust him. Well, there’s a very good reason he didn’t tell you, Addison. Because the problem with information is that the only place we can keep it secret is in our minds.
There’s a chance Janice is trying to stop the Quantum Leap program from getting ahead of its secret and nefarious plans, although I’m inclined to think it helps a lot. After all, what she says makes sense, and breakthrough fans need look no further to find evidence that a Peacock Premium membership loaded with past episodes is worth rewatching.
Every time Ben played with the timeline, by Ziggy the algorithm greatly increased or decreased your chances of success in this situation. If Ben is on a mission to save Addison, everything he remembers or doesn’t remember could affect his chances of ultimately saving her. Ben chose to jump without explaining anything to him or to the others in the breakthrough program, so it might be assumed that this part is critical to the success of your plan.
Janice continued her advice to Addison and again hinted at the idea of a traitor among the breakthrough personages. Janice pointed out that Ben can only trust himself at this point, and keeping secrets helps prevent those who sent this future jumper from following him:
Why once you say that out loud to another person in a world with a quantum accelerator? Everyone knows this, including the people who sent Richard Martinez. Want to help Ben? You will tell him not to trust anyone. You too.
Prior to this conversation, Janice spoke with Jenny in the episode after learning Ricardo Martinez and says “there is an order” before quickly falling silent. Was Janice talking about an order as in a shadow organization working against the project, or was she saying that there is a sequence of events in time that must unfold accordingly? We’ll just have to wait and see and hope Ben can keep his mouth shut about any new thoughts that pop into his head in the meantime.
breakthrough airs Mondays on NBC at 10 p.m. ET. It’s one of many shows kicking off the new year, so be sure to check out all the other shows coming in the coming weeks with our 2023 TV schedule.
