Spoilers ahead for episode 11 of Chicago Police Season 10, titled “Long Lost”.
After Chicago Police returned last week with an episode that I take towers through a main line “Long Lost” explored AtwaterThe past in a way that crime drama has never done before. The episode featured Atwater’s father, lew, and delved into why the good officer never talks about him. Atwater finally got the answers he’s been waiting for two decades and a well-deserved arrest. That said, I’m not convinced closure really wrapped up this story, even in a show that’s generally more procedural than serialized.
Atwater unexpectedly crossed paths with his father again after being spotted at the scene of a shooting, just weeks after his probation. It turns out there’s a reason why he never really talked about his father to his coworkers, but he did explain the situation to them. voice once it became clear they should bring Lew into the investigation, saying:
He was there until he was 12. He was a great father, and then he made mistakes that he’ll never understand. He’s inside and I haven’t spoken to or seen him since.
Lew acknowledged his son when they met, but that was about the time they were on the same page in their first scene together. Lew was reluctant to help the CPD in any way that might jeopardize his parole (or have him killed by very bad men who had protected him in prison). Father and son didn’t exactly have a sincere relationship, though Lew eventually asked about it Jordan Yup Vanessaand Atwater was quite composed.
When intelligence discovered that Lew was needed for more than identification, Atwater went looking for his father, which led to a tense exchange between the two men. After his father accused him of being angry, Atwater said he needed to let go of his long-ago anger and make amends so he could take care of his siblings. He chose to remember when Lew was a good father and explained more Ruzek:
My father was there and he was good. Then suddenly he disappeared. He fell into every black stereotype a father could have, and it just didn’t make sense. But I can’t do the same. Shit, I don’t have the luxury of being angry. I don’t take it with me. I’m fine.
Again, Atwater was quite calm and it didn’t seem like his father’s presence was affecting him emotionally… until the very end, with Royce Hawkins giving a fantastic insight into his character finally breaking through. He couldn’t get mad and had to make amends, but he just couldn’t get over the fact that his father had never told him the truth about what happened all those years ago and had turned him from a good father into a criminal that he spent two years with. decades behind bars.
As Lew began to walk away, Atwater stopped him, saying he wanted to talk before they separated. He admitted that even though he had been trying to give a damn for a long time, he needed to figure out what happened. Lew tried to push him away and insist that he wasn’t a good man, and his son hit back, reminding him that he raised Jordan and Vanessa by himself.
Atwater didn’t understand why Lew felt indebted to everyone but him. The officer said he wanted the truth, and that’s what his father finally gave him. He said:
The truth is, we weren’t doing it right. We never have been. We needed money and I found the wrong way to get it. You know, he was just a vigilante, but when the police came, I took him away. I took the blame. I didn’t speak, I didn’t name names, so I went to jail.
Atwater was on the verge of tears when he yelled at Lew asking him why he had never put his son on the list of people who could visit him in prison; his father could only say that no one wanted his son to see them like this and wanted his son to remember the good old days.
After the emotional exchange, Lew turned to leave, and that seemed to be the end of the episode and most likely the end of the story… but Atwater had an offer for his father. He offered Lew the empty drive-in his palace even though they agreed he didn’t deserve it.
So while Atwater has gotten closure in the form of the truth he’s been waiting for twenty years, there’s a lot that hasn’t been resolved with his father, and now Lew will be here, even offscreen. . Could you continue this story next time? PS features an Atwater-focused episode?
Only time will tell on that front, and I’m still waiting for the day Atwater becomes a detective, especially after what LaRoyce Hawkins said about the possibility of a promotion for his character in the fall.
