Collaboration is key to bringing any artistic endeavor to life, but filmmaking is a profession where this kind of endeavor is especially rewarding. Top Gun: nonconformist has proven that time and time again, as the sequel to director Joseph Kosinski’s legacy could be one of best action movies , as well as being one of the most exciting. One of the film’s most poignant emotional beats came from none other than Val Kilmer.
As you share behind the scenes stories with Deadline , Kosinski dug into the emotional heart of Tom Cruise’s recent blockbuster. Part of that resonance came from the storyline between Maverick and Iceman, which saw the latter deal with the same cancer Kilmer battled offscreen. This bond was instrumental in bringing Val Kilmer back to the franchise, as Joseph Kosinski revealed in the following story:
I will never forget the day of the session with him and Tom. This scene with these two guys, two actors in their prime doing a scene like this, their first time together in front of the camera since 1986. The friendship between the two, the mutual respect between the two as real people reflects a lot the personages. So, I think that’s why this scene works so well. When we were preparing the film, we all wanted Val to be a part of it, but we didn’t know what was possible. So we brought Val on board and said, ‘We’d love to have you in this movie. It was his idea to make it as authentic as possible. Once he had that idea, he opened up the whole story and allowed us to tell it better. I was amazed when he offered me this. The scene was intense and very emotional but when the camera wasn’t working listening to it and Tom was talking about the shenanigans of making the first film and the fun they were having and the tricks they were pulling on each other and the madness . of that era and era, it was a lot of fun to listen to. You really felt this connective tissue in the past tense.
Seeing Val Kilmer return was enough necessary for Top Gun: nonconformist arrive , shaping the role so that the actor could participate was a big deal. Finally, our return to Captain Pete Mitchell’s story hinted that former rival Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, now an admiral, has become Maverick’s biggest supporter. Barely able to speak, but still very much in touch with Tom Cruise’s character, we see one last scene of Val Kilmer’s character framing his old friend before he finally dies off screen.
Iceman’s big hint also works perfectly, as the final conversation between Maverick and Iceman is an emotional pivot for Top Gun: Maverick’s overall story. It was definitely worth it when even the man himself saw his Top Gun: nonconformist scene, e Val Kilmer endorsed emotional gain . Reading his and Tom Cruise’s stories looking back on the set of Tony Scott’s 1986 original only makes the character dynamic between the two onscreen that much more effective. In other words, even the toughest man probably had a hard time not shedding a tear during this emotional scene.
it’s a shame there should be a best cannon 3 , there will be no Iceman returning to give wise counsel again. On the other hand, bringing Kilmer back for one last appearance was a fluke, capping off his character story appropriately. Yup Dissident is the end of best weapon legacy, the same could be said for this impressive collaborative storytelling venture. But if it continues, there will be plenty of room for actors like Monica Barbaro and Lewis Pullman to make some character tweaks, as they did with Maverick’s early story.
Top Gun: nonconformist can be enjoyed from the comfort of your home, as the film pulses through the tower we all know as awards season. In addition to being available for purchase on physical media, it is also currently available for streaming. you should have one Paramount+ Subscription you can enjoy a double feature of both movies on best weapon or focus more on one of the big blockbusters of 2022.
