Law and order: SVU went into service in the new year when Captain Olivia Benson was attacked outside her Manhattan apartment building by a gang from the Bronx. The BX9 gang made it extremely personal when they attacked it in front of Noah, and Benson wasn’t about to give up. She was willing to find a way to join the Bronx investigation as well as captain of SVU Manhattan, but according to actor Maurice Compte, there is a new danger for her.
Maurice Compte made his debut in SVU in the fall as Captain Duarte out of the Bronx gang unit, and quickly came into conflict with Benson when he followed up on a case in his turf and tried to use BX9’s rapists as informants instead of putting them behind bars. When the actor spoke to Gossipify of her character’s attraction to Benson Along with the benefits of working with Mariska Hargitay, she also explained how the situation is different this time around with Benson in Duarte territory, saying:
The difference is that we have gone from the world of Manhattan, in general, to the world of the Bronx. There are some incredibly beautiful areas in the Bronx, but I think the areas of the Bronx that we’re dealing with tend to be kind of on the lower spectrum of the crime scale. So there’s a little more danger in this world.
There are wonderful places in the Bronx, but these places are not the places to SVU where Olivia Benson will obviously have to follow in his tracks. According to Maurice Compte, she faces “more dangers” (and of a different nature). Sure, she’s been in a lot of danger and survived a lot to get to where she is as captain of SVU Manhattan, so she knows how to handle even the worst of circumstances.
While Benson had very unfortunate reasons for joining the BX9 investigation that was taking place in the Bronx, the SVU the actors have had much better experiences when given the opportunity to film there. When I asked Compte (formerly known for his work on programs like drug dealers, PowerYup Maya MC) about her experience filming on location for the show, she was quick to say, “I love it,” and went on to share the story of one particularly memorable night:
We were in the Bronx one night shooting. When you’re in the Bronx and you’re heavily involved in someone else’s community, you block several streets and people end up passing by. There were a lot of guys who would stop right in front of me as we drove by and say, ‘What are you, man?’ And he would look at me and I would tell him about a show, whether it was Power or Narcos. They’d be like ‘Oh my God!’ and literally, during the shoot, they were just taking a picture with me. It was easier to get them to take a picture with me than trying to rush them.
It’s not every job that an actor gets recognition for, and Compte went on to say he’ll be asking fans to stand out of the shot and then come talk to them. Crediting New York with an element that stands out from other places, the actor returned to explaining why Benson leaving his usual territory could create more danger:
There’s also this sense of community in New York, which is what makes it so great. New York is truly a go-with-the-flow kind of place, and when you’re trying to go against the grain, it can be tough.
Maurice Compte also stated that “New York is magical”, and she was certainly the one to welcome Law franchise for decades, starting with the original series (which returned with a 2022 revival), continuing with Law and order: SVU since 1999, then expanding again in 2021 with the spin-off Stabler Law and order: organized crime. The actor clearly enjoyed his time filming SVU; Will Duarte have as much fun in the current story?
I think it’s pretty safe to say that good times will be rare. SVU so for the foreseeable future, fans will want to look back fondly on good times like Benson and Rollins spending one last night together, and then the long-awaited wedding of the Rollisi in the first half of season 24. For now, we can only tune in to new episodes of Law and order: SVU Thursday at 9pm ET on NBC and I hope the best for Benson.
I’m still crossing my fingers for a more stable look than would be consistent with Organized crime at some point in the TV show 2023 but i can still watch the first seasons of SVU with Cristobal Meloni! transmission with a Peacock Premium Membership !
