After James Gunn was hired to run DC Studios with producer Peter Safran, there have been some big waves in the realm of DC cinema. This includes wonder woman 3 being scrapped and Warner Bros. choosing not to bring back Henry Cavill as Superman in favor of moving forward with a new Man of Steel-centric reboot that Gunn is writing. But then those major developments revolved around the continuity of the DC Extended Universe; there is the separate the Batman universe to realize it’s being led by Matt Reeves, and the director shared his reaction to DC’s changes and Gunn’s new role.
Matt Reeves kicked off his run with Gotham City’s Caped Crusader last March with the Batmanand with the current script Batman 2 with Mattson Tomlin, he’s been working on a limited series centered around Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin that will reach HBO Max subscribers. But that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of what this corner of DC media could bring to the table, and while I was talking to Yahoo! Reeves shared that he has already spoken to James Gunn and will meet again soon, with Peter Safran, saying:
We talked several times. I have to meet him and Peter this month. They have been working feverishly on what they do and I have been working hard with my partners on what we do, all our programs and everything. So we’re going to have a meeting where we’re going to talk about everything that’s going on and what the arcs of those two things are. Can’t wait to see what they do.
For those who like that the Batman The universe is separate from the DCEU, it doesn’t look like it will change just because James Gunn and Peter Safran are now steering the DC Studios ship. Matt Reeves added that these men have their own “big plan” and he has “this big Bat-verse plan,” and the next conversation is more or less about Gunn and Safran meeting Reeves. Of course, there’s always the twist that this could change, and that Robert Pattinson’s Batman could one day be tied into a new DC shared universe. For now though, the only thing on the agenda is for Reeves to be on the same page as Gunn and Safran about what’s to come on both DC fronts.
Despite the Batman Originally conceived as a vehicle for Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne, once Affleck left the project, Matt Reeves turned it into a reboot centered around a young Bruce who has been fighting crime in Gotham City for only two years. the Batman saw Pattinson’s main title go up against Paul Dano’s Edward Nashton aka The Riddler, a forensic accountant turned serial killer who has been targeting the elite and corrupt citizens of Gotham City. In addition to Bruce Penguin meeting Selina Kyle/Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman along the way, other notable characters in the film included Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon, Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth, and John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone.
In addition to the aforementioned projects, Matt Reeves is working on an HBO Max series centered around Arkham Asylum, and projects centered around Batman villains Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg are also reportedly in development. So it’s clear that Matt Reeves has big plans the BatmanDC’s corner of the multiverse and we will continue to release dates on its development, as well as more details on what James Gunn and Peter Safran are up to.
