Josh Lucas falls for young Kevin Costner, but actually wanted another role in Yellowstone before John Dutton

Throughout his career thus far, Josh Lucas has proven himself to be an asset in seemingly every imaginable genre, from horror (Session 9) to romantic comedies (Sweet home Alabama) to prestigious dramas (ford against ferrari) to big-budget games (Poseidon). But audiences in 2022 can’t get enough of Lucas’ western ribs for theirs Return to yellow stone as John Duton in the ’90s timeline. He got more screen time than ever in season 5 as the younger (and deeper-voiced) version of Kevin Costner’s ranch patriarch, which was an overall win for everyone. But it turns out that if the actor was initially successful, we would see him every week as a completely different character.

Perhaps strangely, all things considered, Josh Lucas initially had his eye on playing John Dutton’s second banana on the ranch, Rip Wheeler. when we talk to Deadline On how co-creator Taylor Sheridan envisioned two generations of actors playing John Dutton, Lucas said:

They approached me all the way before starting shooting at the pilot. Taylor and I had a long discussion about, you know, The Godfather and what Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro did. These men don’t necessarily have to look alike. They must have the essence of each other. I wanted to be in the pilot. I’ve never actually told people, I really wanted to play Rip. But clearly I wanted Cole Hauser and that was great for me because I’ve known Cole since we were 17, 18.

With Sylvester Stallone currently starring in the gangster-centric drama. king of Tussa For those with Paramount+ subscriptions, it’s perhaps not that surprising that Sheridan mentioned The Godfather explaining his ideas for Lucas and Costner to take on the same role. Now, how long will it take for the prolific TV creator to add Robert De Niro to his cast?

All that aside, the big plus here is that Lucas recently said campaigned with Reese Witherspoon to Sweet Home Alabama sequel, he was initially trying to play the role that Cole Hauser turned into one of TV’s most beloved tough guys. Which might not seem so strange if it happened that way to begin with, perhaps with the actor dying and growing his hair out a bit like Hauser did to change the look of him naturally blond and clean-shaven.

But now, it seems especially strange to think of Lucas playing opposite Kevin Costner as Rip, having spent the past five seasons watching him impress as a younger version of Costner. It’s probably not normal for a ranch hand to look more like the boss than the boss’s own offspring. Besides, he might have made things even weirder if this plastic surgeon had given it to him a version that resembles Kevin Costner’s nose if I played Rip. Though hopefully the doctor hasn’t made the offer in this hypothetical scenario.

It’s nice to know that Lucas and Hauser have been on good terms for more than half their lives. Hopefully, they’ll hang out during filming, though that doesn’t seem very likely considering they don’t share scenes in the same decade.

Josh Lucas has also considered joining the yellow stone universe in those early days before anyone realized it was going to be the biggest TV show this side of George RR Martin’s HBO series. Here’s how he said it:

I think I made it to episode 3 or episode 4, I don’t remember exactly. Yellowstone was not Yellowstone then. These people were creating something and putting their heart and soul into it, but it hadn’t quite happened yet.

Josh Lucas is expected to play more than John Dutton in 2023, luckily for moviegoers who don’t want to wait until summer. He is slated to star in Rod Blackhurst’s crime thriller blood for dust take on an A+ team that includes Kit Harington, Scoot McNairy, Ethan Suplee and Stephen Dorff; Also, his next thriller the black devil It will air on April 14th.
