Cate Blanchett lashed out at the “patriarchal pyramid” of Hollywood awards ceremonies on Sunday, hoping for a change in the entire “structure,” as she received the best actress trophy from the Critics Choice Association in Los Angeles.
Australian-American actress leads Oscar race with role in drama Tar, for which she had already won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama last week. She plays a ruthless lesbian driver at the peak of her career and whose life is falling apart.
“What is this patriarchal pyramid that makes someone stand here?” he asked in front of a packed house. “Why not just say that there are multiple female performances that form concert and dialogue with each other and stop the televised horse race?”
Soon a third Oscar?
“Every one of the women, whether it’s on TV, in a movie (…) or in a tampon commercial, you all do a magnificent job that is a constant source of inspiration for me,” she added. “So thank you. I’m sharing this (the trophy) with all of you.”
Cate Blanchett could win her third Oscar on March 12 with her role in Tarafter being rewarded for her work in Jasmine Blue by Woody Allen (2014) and Aviator by Martin Scorsese (2005).
Activist of the feminist cause, Cate Blanchett interprets in Tar a narcissistic and tyrannical character reminiscent of the sexual scandals denounced by the MeToo movement. With one difference: Lydia Tar is a woman and a lesbian.
