It’s been more than three decades since audiences have seen Eddie Murphy play witty detective Axel Foley. Naturally, he will take on this role in the long-awaited fourth installment, Beverly Hills Police: Axel Foley. Unsurprisingly, Murphy had to get back into the swing of things when it came to doing stunts for the action sequences. These moments are emotional for the audience but, as we know, they are not always easy for the actors who play them. It seems Murphy had a good experience working on the highly anticipated film, as he realized that he was going to “die” midway through production.
The fan-favorite actor confessed to pulling stunts at age 60 while speaking in Eastern Time following his Cecil B. DeMille Award speech that made headlines at the 80th Golden Globes ceremony. Soon 2 Americas the star said she was 21 when she made the original beverly hills police (considered one of Eddie Murphy’s best films). Unsurprisingly, doing stunts at 61 is a far cry from doing it at 21. Murphy told the outlet how difficult filming was sometimes, recalling a conversation with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, during which Murphy mentioned another iconic star. :
It’s heartwarming because, like I said, I was 61 and shooting action scenes. You would see my heart beating in my chest. There were several times that I felt like I was going to die on set. I know some actors do those kinds of stunts and stuff. Before shooting the film, I told Jerry [Bruckheimer]”Look, I’m 61. Don’t ask me to do something you wouldn’t ask Morgan Freeman.
To be fair, it’s only fair that the comedian compares himself to Morgan Freeman in this regard at this point in his life. Freeman has appeared in many action films in recent years, including the black Knight trilogy and Lucy, no need to throw your hands or run for meters. However, it’s worth mentioning that the Oscar winner is two decades older than the beverly hills police star, anyway.
Eddie Murphy has shared more behind-the-scenes details of his retaliation against the Detroit Police officer. He explained that he and Jerry Bruckheimer finally landed on a system that would work for the production and presumably keep the actor safe. But that hasn’t made things entirely easy for Murphy, it seems:
He said, “Oh, we’ll bring the dude in, we’ll double the action.” And I said, “Okay.” But then there were some things you had to do. So I found myself jumping and running and rolling. And it was a lot!
It looks like fans will see Eddie Murphy performing action stunts throughout the film. While Murphy may have passed away in pain, he definitely isn’t dead. Plus, he’s also a professional and knows the job has to get done one way or another. Let’s hope that their efforts are not in vain and that the fourth installment of their franchise proves to be a success.
No release date has been announced for Beverly Hills Police: Axel Foley at the moment, but it has been confirmed that it will be broadcast on Netflix. Murphy revealed that he completed the third sequel alongside franchise favorites Judge Reinhold and Bronson Pinchot and newbies like Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who were thrilled to work with Murphy. Ahead of the action comedy debut, you can check out Murphy’s latest comedy, your peopleusing an active Netflix subscription when it opens on January 27 as part of the new 2023 film release schedule.
