After marking the DC cinematic landscape with the suicide squadfollowed by Lollipop A spin-off series available to stream for HBO Max subscribers, James Gunn is now turning his sights on DC’s heaviest hitter, figuratively and literally. Gunn, who co-helmed DC Studios with producer Peter Safran for a few months, announced in December that he was writing a Superman reboot after it was decided Henry Cavill would not reprise the role of the Man of Steel. after his death. . black adam cameo. It now appears that Gunn has revealed a key piece of source material that inspired his reboot.
With Kal-El/Clark Kent debuting in the pages of 1938 action comics #1, there’s no shortage of source material from which to write a Superman movie, but as with many superheroes, there’s no question that some of his stories are more important than others. one of them is superman all stars by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely, and James Gunn shared on Twitter that he’s currently tackling this 12-issue saga.

Comic books and a cup of coffee are a winning combination, but it’s also worth mentioning that James Gunn shared with a fan who read superman all stars “more, many times”. As a fan of the comics, I’ve reread my favorites many times, so maybe it’s all about Gunn: enjoying one of the most critically acclaimed Superman stories yet again. However, since Gunn is writing a Superman reboot, one can’t help but wonder if he’ll be back superman all stars to help inspire the cinematic story you create.
Published between 2005 and 2008, and set outside the main DC Comics continuity, superman all stars followed a version of the Kryptonian superhero who was dying from overexposure to the sun and decided to spend his final days performing as many heroic feats as possible. Included between superman all starsIts many accolades have won it two Eisner Awards and two Harvey Awards, and it was adapted into an animated film in 2011 starring James Denton as Superman, Christina Hendricks as Lois Lane, Anthony LaPaglia as Lex Luthor, among others. Russell Crowe’s Jor-El also gives a monologue Man of Steel which repeats almost exactly what our hero’s Kryptonian father told him superman all stars.
Since the Superman in superman all stars protects the world for some time, while James Gunn’s reboot will take some sign of the Batman following a young Clark Kent (who has yet to be cast), but without telling his origin story, if Gunn is truly inspired superman all stars, obviously the story that boils over will not be a direct adaptation. It’s a great source of material to refer to, however, and even if Gunn’s reboot ends up going in a different direction both narratively and tonally, Superman fans who haven’t yet read this limited series should fix it as soon as possible. It can be easily read digitally if you subscribe to DC Infinite Universe.
While we await concrete details on what to expect from the James Gunn reboot, check out the next DC movies on the slate, with this year’s deals starting when. Shazam! fury of the gods hits theaters March 17.
