30 years ago, archival footage of Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger has been reused for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to bring to American audiences a whole new story featuring teenagers with attitude battling the forces of evil. The result launched a popular franchise and Rangers it remains strong in many types of media. In a few months, the franchise will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a standalone special called Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Foreverand while many familiar faces will return for this story, there are a few Rangers fans online who are upset that the late Jason David Frank has been banned. However, that is not the case at all.
For context, Jason David Frank passed away at the age of 49 on November 19, 2022, but Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Forever it was shot before his death. Frank starred in the Rangers franchises like Tommy Oliver, who played the Green Ranger Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, later became the White Ranger. Frank had already returned for anniversary episodes such as power rangers savage forceIt’s “forever red” Power Rangers Super Megaforce“Legendary battle” and Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel“Dimensions in Danger”, but in May 2022 on a Facebook live stream (via Yahoo!), Frank said he would not be attending the Rangers franchise 30th anniversary event. In fact, he said he’s “done enough for the Rangers mark,” and at the time he was concentrating on making his film legend of the white dragon.
So there was never a storyline that Jason David Frank would be involved in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Forever. However, as you’ll see below in the behind-the-scenes video from the special, we’ll see the Green Ranger in action. So two possibilities come to mind. The first, and more plausible, possibility is that Tommy appears in this special, but will either remain fully clothed throughout and shut up, or be played by another actor. The second possibility is that the Green Ranger coat has transitioned to one of the familiar faces we’ll see once and always.
Who are these familiar faces, you ask? Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Forever will see the return of David Yost’s Billy Cranston, Mighty Morphin Power Rangersblue ranger; Zack Taylor by Walter E. Jones, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers‘ First Black Ranger; Rocky De Santos by Steve Cardenas, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers‘ according to Red Ranger; Kat Hillard by Catherine Sutherland, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers‘Second Pink Ranger; Karan Ashley as Aisha Campbell Mighty Morphin Power Rangers‘Second Yellow Ranger; and Johnny Yong Bosch as Adam Park, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers‘ according to Black Ranger. While it has been confirmed that Billy, Zack, Rocky and Kat will be wearing their respective Ranger suits again, Aisha and Adam are wearing SPD (Space Patrol Delta) uniforms, thus linking once and always a SPD Power Rangers since 2005. However, there may come a time when one of them (I’m thinking specifically of Adam) will have to step in as the new Green Ranger.
With the aforementioned people, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Forever will feature Barbara Goodson and Richard Horvitz reprising the voices of Rita Repulsa and Alpha, respectively, as well as Charlie Kersh as Minh, daughter of Trini Kwan, the former Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Yellow ranger. Trini was played by Thuy Trang, who died in 2001, and once and always will be dedicated to him and to Jason David Frank. The original series also starred Austin St. John and Amy Jo Johnson as the first Red and Pink Rangers, respectively.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Forever reaches Netflix subscribers on April 19. This year will also see the launch of Cosmic fury of the Power Rangers on the same streaming platform, continuing the story of the Power Rangers Dino Fury seasons. Netflix is also developing a more adult-oriented version.
