The film was so successful that not only did it greenlight a sequel, but the second film was released 16 months later, an incredible achievement for any franchise. There has since been a demand for a third film from fans of the franchise, but it looks as expected. happy dying day 3 seems less and less likely.
Writer/director Christopher Landon spoke to slashfilm recently and while he clarifies that he’s not giving up hope of making the third entry in the series, there has apparently been no progress on another film since the release of the second film. According to Landon, everything is blocked by the fact that happy death day 2u it just wasn’t the huge success of the first film.
No movement, unfortunately. There was a small moment where I really felt like I had Universal’s attention, but they forgot about me. I think it’s really hard for them, and I’m very upfront and honest about the first movie being a big hit. He made a lot of money. It was well received. And the sequel was not. The sequel is loved by the people who saw it, but it didn’t make much money and it wasn’t a hit for them. So it’s very hard to motivate them to make a third film when the last one didn’t work. Almost exactly a year ago, Blumhouse’s Jason Blum said that something was “moving” with the property, but again, it was seemingly going nowhere. Everything these men thought could happen apparently never happened.
Yet Christopher Landon has not lost hope of doing happy dying day 3 arrive. This indicates that there is a possibility that the film will happen as a streaming exclusive on Peacock. Landon also reveals that the plan he has for a third film isn’t time sensitive, so if it takes another few years to come to fruition, it won’t hurt the story. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a franchise get a new entry after years on the shelf, so there’s always hope.
