For me everything is a matter of humanity. Sure, Thanos is a big and iconic villain, but he’s also a big purple CGI guy. He is an alien from outer space. What I really wanted to lean into is that Kang is a human being. Kang is also a very lonely character. We’ll see him in many different ways in the future, but I really wanted to show the humanity and even the vulnerability of this character before he reaches Avengers-scale apocalyptic heights.
Like Thanos, Kang the Conqueror has been battling the Avengers for decades in the comics, and now it’s time for him to shine on the big screen. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania Director Peyton Reed described Jonathan Majors’ version of the character as a “warrior and tactician” who has “mastery over time”, and adding in all the advanced technology at his disposal, one could argue that he is a major threat to reality.
