‘The Last of Us’ hits new HBO audience record

The series recorded the highest ratings increase in HBO history between its first and second episodes on the day of its release.

After claiming the title of HBO’s second-best start in more than 15 years, the series The last of us set a new record. According to data from Warner Bros. Discovery, broadcast by varietythe show’s second episode, aired on January 23, drew 5.7 million viewers.

Thus, HBO registered a 22% increase between the audience figures for the first episode (4.7 million viewers) and those for the second, on the day of its broadcast. A gap that represents the “largest audience increase for an original series in the history of the platform,” according to HBO.

The channel also released viewership figures for the first episode, saying that after a full week of availability, it has now been watched by 18 million viewers.

Long awaited by fans, the series The last of us is an adaptation of the hit video game of the same name that has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

The action of the series takes place 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization by a fungus that transforms humans into zombies, and follows the setting of the original game. The hero, Joel, a survivor played by Pedro Pascal, meets Ellie, a teenager played by Bella Ramsey whom he must protect at all costs because she is humanity’s last hope.

The third episode of The last of us It will premiere on January 29 on HBO in the United States before being broadcast the next day in France on Prime Video. A total of nine episodes are expected for this first season.
