Kim Possible’s Christy Carlson Romano and Will Friedle Explain How ‘They Can’t Walk Away’ From the Impact of Disney’s Breakthrough Decades Later

Over the years, Disney Channel has released a number of great TV shows that are considered classics today, and that includes Kim possible. Created by Buzz Lightyear of Star CommandBob Schooley and Mark McCorkle, the animated show focused on the titular teenage heroine as she tried to balance her heroism with her personal life. A lot of talented people made the show what it has become, but a lot of credit goes to Christy Carlson Romano, who voiced Kim. The same goes for his co-star, Will Friedle, who helped bring the hilarious (and sometimes ill-fated) Ron Stoppable to life. Like their fans, the Perfect Actors are very fond of their show today and recently explained that they “couldn’t escape” the shock of the show decades later.

Honestly, it’s hard to believe it’s been over 15 years since Kim and Ron rode, I mean, flew all night in the series finale. Despite the passage of time, the love for the series, which aired for four seasons from 2002 to 2007, seems stronger than ever. Unsurprisingly, the show’s stars are no strangers to hype. I spoke to Christy Carlson Romano and Will Friedle to celebrate their voice-over-focused podcast, I hear voices. I asked the pair what they thought of the show’s legacy, and Romano went on to explain how she’s seen his influence on his life over the years:

Well, I think the legacy continues. I think the legacy is very present. Right? …I think when we think of legacy, we think of something that has passed, but that’s about it… People still literally dress up as Kim Possible, referring to Kim Possible, and you can’t help it. Trust me, I’ve tried, I can’t help it. [Laughs]

I’m sure many people have gone to fan conventions over the years and met at least one or two cosplayers dressed as Kim or Ron. Some might even go the extra mile by wearing a stuffed animal from the scene where Ron steals Rufus the naked mole. The show has clearly struck a nerve, to the point where Will Friedle even joked that he “invented” the concept of taking a communicator with you everywhere. The legendary boy meets world problem The member then explained how the transmission and pandemic of COVID-19 has affected his visibility in recent years:

One of the things with streaming is, you know, there’s been this weird combination of, with the pandemic, with everything going on in the world, people have freaked out. And by a little scared, I mean a lot of us are really scared. … So the combination of transmission and this kind of fear made people feel comfortable again: their comfort zone. They wanted that nostalgia, that warm blanket from the days when, at least in their minds, times were easier. And it brought them back to things like Kim Possible, Even Stevens [and] Boy meets world. You know, he took them back in time, and it’s different for everyone. … So I think people have it [comfort, when] you hear the “doot doot doot doot” and some people take them back to childhood.

Christy Carlson Romano agrees with the sentiment, saying fans’ eyes “light up” whenever the tune plays and it’s really “sweet” to see it. Both actors experience this show quite often, as both have attended and continue to attend conventions. Will Friedle spoke in more detail about what it’s like to have these great fan meetups:

That’s why we like conventions. I’m a big nerd and walking around convention halls is one of my favorite things to do and watching artists and talking to authors and stuff. And invariably, at least once, usually several times, you’ll hear someone play, and that’s Kim Possible’s communicator. So it goes nowhere. We love that it’s going nowhere and are incredibly happy.

I totally agree with the idea that the franchise will last for a while. Only in 2019, Disney Channel has produced a live-action film program based saw Christy Carlson Romano appear in a supporting role. She and Will Friedle are clearly aware of not only their impact on pop culture, but also their central place in the animation sphere. And as Friedle mentioned during our chat, they’re hoping to find “the next Kim.” through the Super Awesome contest to become the next great voice actor . The competition aims to give an amateur actor a chance to make it into the profession and who knows, maybe it will help produce the next great voice actor.

However, in the meantime, we can say with complete confidence that the fans keep thinking Kim possible in the years to come. It is also likely that some will continue to ask reboot, for which Christy Carlson Romano is not available . We can only speculate if that will ever happen but, right now, I’m glad so many people are still enjoying the show as it is.

If you want to review Kim possible or haven’t checked it out yet, it’s currently available to stream using a Disney+ subscription . And be sure to check out his two contacts at his podcast, I hear voices when new episodes come out on Mondays on IHeartRadio and Apple Podcasts.
