There are a lot of comic book movie fans who have their eyes on James Gunn right now. He and Peter Safran took over as heads of DC Films in November, and the duo have since worked hard to pull together a number of projects to keep the franchise busy for years to come. Gunn promised us news in January, but time is running out.
James Gunn had previously announced that the first details on the characters and stories that will make up the first films of this new era will arrive in January. On the 20th of the month, Gunn asked gently Chirping Everyone calm down, since he still had more than a third of the month left. But now it’s still been a few days, so Gunn now has less than a week to keep his promise.
To be fair, all it takes is a press release from Warner Bros. for anything Gunn has promised to happen, so it can definitely happen at any moment. It doesn’t need to be a massive presentation like we might expect to see if SDCC is on the horizon. That press release might as well be written already, just waiting for some details to be confirmed before hitting send.
If so, we might expect the last day of January to be the date we’re looking for. There may be contracts under negotiation or offers to certain players awaiting acceptance. If they have until the end of the month to finalize some deals, the announcement could easily come at the last minute.
We saw Jason Momoa make some comments on Instagram that, without revealing details, clearly hinted that he was going to be part of what was to come. Whatever news he was referring to had apparently just happened, so it’s likely that Gunn and Safran are in the midst of similar conversations with other cast members. This can include both those who have already been a part of DC, like Momoa, as well as others who may be new.
We know that James Gunn is working on a Superman movie that will cast an actor other than Henry Cavill for the role. Of course, that doesn’t mean we’ll get a lot of details about this movie this month. It may be that the project is further away. We know that Gunn and Safran are working on the next 10 years of movies, but they won’t be announcing plans for the full decade this month.
We don’t really know what’s planned for the future. But we know wonder woman 3 is in development hell and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam won’t be returning anytime soon, though a future return isn’t out of the question.
If anything happened to force a February postponement, James Gunn probably would have said so by now. You are generally receptive and honest on social media. Since we haven’t heard from him, it appears the previously announced plan is still in effect. Fans will have to continue to be careful. As the number of days in January decreases, the likelihood of an announcement only increases.
