Emilia Clarke’s The Pod Generation is a witty sci-fi satire on the future of pregnancy

While sci-fi fans like me wait for the the long-awaited sixth season of black mirror soon to be released, a film in the lineup of the 2023 Sundance Film Festival , The generation of pods, provided the kind of “what if” that could have accompanied other episodes of the Netflix series. movie stars game of Thrones Emilia Clarke live in a version of the future where there is the possibility of having a baby via a plastic (and very expensive) egg. What I take away the most from all of this is how probable that sounds.

The generation of pods this indicates that our phones are controlling pretty much everything in our lives right now, so why shouldn’t it be for childbirth someday? Writer-director Sophie Barthes’ film offers an intelligent vision of what our future could look like as screen time demands more time than ever. But instead of being a terrifying horror film, it’s a captivating and satirical take on the subject, taking the audience along the path of its concept.

The world of cinema imagines the world’s Siris and Alexa embedded in our homes and programming our entire lives. With the world so taken over by technology, Emilia Clarke’s lead character Rachel works for a tech company and has scheduled time in nature with a “nature pod” tour, where she sits in a chair and receives scenes and sounds of nature life. Meanwhile, her husband, Alvy de Chiwetel Ejiofor, is a botany professor who works around the clock with living plants. So when they get off the waiting list to get an egg, Rachel is nervous about telling her husband that she doesn’t want to have their baby the old-fashioned way.

The generation of pods it’s the kind of movie that can spark interesting discussions about the importance of pregnancy to having a baby. In a world where couples can have a child and put the uterus on the shelf as a household item until it’s ready, this especially speaks to the increasingly isolated world we find ourselves in when we can have so many things easily on our phones. When we do things like lyrics or have all the songs at our fingertips, there’s a little bit of human connection that gets lost there. This movie takes it to the next level by considering what we would lose if pregnancy had the same access. The scary part behind all of this is the idea that tech companies are holding onto the very lives of future generations.

There are some upsides too, as we see Rachel able to work, drink and relatively enjoy life while having a baby cooked in her plastic pod. But what happens is that Alvy is desperate to join her and begins to assume the role of a pregnant mother, spending his days and nights with her pack. Many intriguing ideas are explored here, and the film has already received the Sundance Institute’s Science-in-Film Initiative Feature Film Award with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. For Deadline the award was given for the film’s “bold” portrayal of her world, as well as “an artist’s exploration of the evolution of gender roles dissociated from biology”.

The generation of pods has no place in Movie release schedule 2023 yet, but we will keep you updated. What Emilia Clarke leaves game of Thrones , the franchise, of course, continued with dragon house and more following game of Thrones clock .
