Critics saw those of Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne. Poker faceand they’re loving the latest crime comedy offering. It appears that those interested may want to upgrade to a Peacock Premium subscription, as these reviews don’t seem to boast about the quality of the new program.
A common theme in Poker face reviews is the mention of its clear nods to classic TV mysteries. Many critics, such as Daniel D’Addario of Variety, have noted that the series is set in the same format as the classic crime series. Dove. D’Addario noted that while this format removes the “Who Is” element from the mystery series, Poker face It compensates for this in two other key ways:
The crimes Charlie investigates aren’t hard to figure out, and as ‘Columbo’ we’re ahead of the time investigating what happened, before our detective solves it over the course of the game, about an hour later. But the stories are creatively constructed and beautifully acted.
The mystery may be spoiled for the viewer before the episode begins, but there are many other positives to the show. Many critics have highlighted the appearance of several memorable guest stars, such as actors Adrien Brody and Tim Meadows.
Linda Holmes of NPR positively praised Natasha Lyonne’s performance as Charlie but noted that it was not much different from her previous acting roles. Holmes noted the similarity to other portrayals of Lyonne in reviewing her, adding that there are a few key differences that set Charlie apart from her:
On the one hand, she’s an actress who is always herself: She doesn’t often disappear into roles in a way that makes you go, “Oh wow, is that Natasha Lyonne? But at the same time, there are nuances in her work here that are different from, say, her much-loved role in Netflix’s Russian Doll. She’s more relaxed and controlled in this part, still fun and completely unique, but also careful and deliberate. Charlie is also a little happier, even when she’s in trouble.
Charlie, played by Natasha Lyonne, is a former poker player on the run with an instinct for understanding when people lie to her. While Charlie is no detective, his ability to determine the truth about others ultimately serves him well as he navigates his way through various murder mysteries during his travels across America.
the EdgeCharles Pulliam-Moore was another who pointed out that unlike Rian Johnson’s blockbusters knives out Yup glass onion, which tie into the series in an entertaining way, audiences won’t be in the dark about what’s going on. The public will know who committed the crime before Charlie, but there’s an edge Poker face unlike Johnson’s other murder mystery offerings:
With Knives Out, you can try to solve the mystery with Benoit Blanc and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into building a narrative puzzle like Glass Onion. The same goes for Poker Face to some extent. But between the show’s episodic format and the space it gives its guest stars to chew up the set before Charlie breaks the deal, it ends up feeling a lot more lived-in and less cheesy than its Netflix cousins.
Immersion is usually the key to a number of qualities, which feels like high praise Poker face. It might not shock viewers in the same way a horribly silly crime does, but it has a world that feels “lived in” and another nod to an impressive lineup of guest stars.
If there is a complaint about Poker face online, it could be that of the TV line. While Dave Nemetz was generally a fan of the original Peacock, he warned viewers that their patience in episodes may run out due to the amount of preparation that goes into each episode:
Your tolerance for Poker Face’s languid pace may vary, too: Episodes typically run well over an hour, and extended opening scenes detailing each week’s crime can run nearly 20 minutes before Charlie arrives in city. .
Criticism aside, critics are largely big fans of Poker face. Something like Maria is chasing Rachel Leishman, they are ready for more episodes, as she wrote in her positive review of the series:
There hasn’t been a show like this that has asked me for more episodes and on the edge of my seat every week in quite some time, and of course it’s Rian Johnson (and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman) who have brought it to me.

Poker face premiered on Peacock on Thursday January 26th. Reviews are mostly positive about the new series, but it remains to be seen whether viewership scores will be as positive for the mystery show.
