Spoilers below for those who haven’t seen it yet. The Last of Us‘ second episode, so watch out!
Although I think most people would agree The Last of Us is a story about the burgeoning relationship between central characters Joel and Ellie, give credit where it’s due – it’s also a showcase for the rare Clickers that evolved undesirably due to cordyceps infections. They are some of the baddest and scariest antagonists in modern video games, so it was amazing to see how their live-action debut in HBO extension The Last of Us compared to the starting material. And star Anna Torv confirmed to Gossipify that the actors playing the Clickers were also scaring the actors to film the museum scene.
I’ve already spoken to Anna Torv The Last of Us‘ audience fortune of an HBO premiere, and after discussing her character’s sad and grim death, I asked her if there was a specific way for her to settle into a panic mindset before filming, or if the situation in which she was doing the work herself. In her words:
In clicker combat, it was pretty easy to freak out about this, because so much of it was real. So the faces, the prosthetics and everything was just amazing. It was all prosthetic makeup. So these guys came up with this [facial application], unable to see. Also, the actors playing the clickers, they worked really hard on all that kind of movement and how it looked, so that was it. And also the – [makes Clicker noise] – even the sounds, whatever was going on in the room.
I know I wasn’t the only one surprised to find out first. The Last of Us it would keep things practical for as many costumes, effects, and sets as possible, in an effort to further distance the HBO series from its digital roots. Which is a testament to the brilliant adaptation choices of co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who have so far proven to be in over their heads when it comes to figuring out how to successfully bring a video game to life. (Or death, if you will.)

Of course, all of these plans would have gone to waste if the show’s Clickers pale in comparison to the game’s. fully committed to displaying all the nasty qualities that players love about them. (Not to mention the dedication it takes from the actors tossing their bodies like infected runners.)
As such, I’m beyond thrilled to hear that the actors were in the players’ shoes during filming and the shot was in full effect that day. I guess it would have been slightly less effective if they screamed like cartoon donkeys or yelled ahh-ooo-gah like old car horns. . . . Okay, now that I’ve thought about it for another three seconds, maybe it is only like a nightmare to see and hear in the dark of an abandoned building.
Anna Torv continued, setting the stage by saying in amazement that for all the actual fear, she wasn’t necessarily thrilled to be with the Clicker cast.
So you stand in the corner and then this huge – they’re very big, big guys – this big guy comes in and goes – [Clicker noise] – to you, and it’s dark, and you’re like, ‘I don’t want to look at it.’ So it wasn’t hard to be like… [gasps] – get scared. Because then they’d turn on the lights and we’d go out and say, I didn’t want to talk to them or look at them. [Laughs.]
You have to imagine it’s a weird site to see a Clicker go out and check their phone backstage, or try to drink water out of those headphones. Luckily, viewers only have to worry about seeing more menacing monsters as the season progresses. Now bring the Bloaters!
