The Avatar 2 writers explain Neytiri’s steer with a spider in the water path

spoilers for Avatar: the path of water He is waiting for us, so read at your own risk.

As many have seen in Avatar: the path of waterA lot has changed for Jake Sully after the events of the first film.. In the years since they defended Pandora, Jake and Neytiri have started a family consisting of three biological children and one adopted Na’vi teenager. And, of course, there’s Spider, the human boy who was born and was meant to stay on the planet. Although the young man is loved by most of the Sullies, Neytiri has a problem with him in their lives and the writers of the Oscar-nominated film explain why that is.

Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, went through a lot in the 2009 film, especially that tense war with Sky People. They have caused the destruction of Pandora in an attempt to mine the precious ore unobtainium, which is prevalent on the huge planet. What Avatar: the path of water explained writer Amanda Silver the casing this plays into his disdain for Jack Champion’s Spider, and the scribe also explained what that means for Neytiri as a character:

You understand how important the forest, the Omatikaya and the planet are to Neytiri. The fact that the RDA threatened and thwarted her so ruthlessly tells you where she’s coming from, why she’s so angry, and that’s part of the fun when she’s dating Jake. But then they have children themselves who are mixed race, if you will, or mixed species. And then I’m Spider, they call him Pink, which means human. It’s a way to explore… I mean, Neytiri is a fully developed character. She has flaws. So there’s nothing wrong with leaving it flawed, we thought. And that’s where Jim comes from.

The dynamic between Jake, Neytiri and Spider it is incredibly complex. The human boy was seen more as a surrogate child of the Sully family, as he grew up with Jake and Neytiri’s children. But all she can think of when she sees him is destruction, and she certainly would love for him to remain among humans. And of course, it doesn’t help that Spider is the son of Colonel Miles Quaritch, whom Neytiri killed in an act of revenge at the end of the first film. Stephen Lang’s villain has obviously been revived for the sequel, and his knowledge of Spider’s lineage shook things up a bit.

Spider, whose real name is Miles Socorro, may be human, but he was raised among the Na’vi. He therefore knows their customs very well and seems to have a lot of respect for the culture. But that doesn’t stop Neytiri from not trusting him. It’s a difficult situation but, as Amanda Silver said, she speaks to the complexity of him as a character. It’s also clear that this plot thread is far from resolved, especially since Neytiri nearly killed Socorro when Quaritch used Kiri as a hostage.

By the end of the film, the young man seems to be closer than ever to the Sully family, although what Jake doesn’t know is that Ragno has made the final decision to save Quaritch from drowning after being left for dead. I don’t know about you, but I suspect he’ll be back in the next movie. Also, while the choice of him might be polarizing, many could certainly argue that Spider is one of the best characters introduced in avatars 2 .

I’m curious to see if (or how) Neytiri’s feelings for the boy change. Meanwhile, Sully’s reaction to his big decision will continue to be one of the burning questions fans have next water path . James Cameron is likely to weave a compelling story arc and one that may not work the way we think.

You will probably get these answers when avatars 3 will be released in theaters on December 20, 2024. In the meantime, you can still watch the path of the water in theaters now and stream the original movie with a Disney+ subscription.
