Images of the handshake between King Charles III and Volodymyr Zelensky at Buckingham

The British sovereign received the Ukrainian head of state in Buckingham on Wednesday. The latter, in the midst of the conflict with Ukraine, makes a surprise visit to the United Kingdom.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose country has resisted Russian aggression for almost a year, was received at Buckingham on Wednesday afternoon by King Charles III. The image of this meeting between the Head of State and the sovereign was revealed calmly.

“The King welcomes President Zelensky to Buckingham Palace,” the royal family’s official account read, along with a photo of a warm handshake between the two men.

expressed solidarity

A new symbol of UK support for Ukraine in its conflict with the Kremlin. Last March, when he was still Prince of Wales, Charles III spoke during a visit to Southend-on-Sea, a city located to the east of London and in mourning in October 2021 for the murder of local deputy David Amess:

“What we experienced in the terrible Southend tragedy was an attack on freedom, on an open society, on freedom itself. We see the same values under attack in Ukraine today in the most excessive way possible.”

“We stand in solidarity with all those who resist brutal attacks,” he added.

The Ukrainian president should take advantage of his visit to the United Kingdom to discuss with the British leaders the country’s support for Ukraine, in terms of military equipment. Visiting Kyiv in November 2022, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced new British military aid of €57 million, as well as humanitarian aid of €18 million.

Following his trip to London, Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to be in Paris this Wednesday evening. He will be received by Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée.
